My 5 year old is really struggling with day time wetting. He seems to only know he needs a wee when he has a small dot of wee in his pants. He never wets himself at school and has had phases of months when he wasn’t wet himself for months.
We’ve tried so many things. Rewards, timers, even trying to get him to sit on the toilet for longer when he does get wet pants to reinforce that it’s less fun to sit on the toilet for 5 mins than it is to just quickly stop your playing and go for a wee.
I just get nervous when it feels like things stray into a punishment because we don’t want to punish him and sometimes he says sorry and it breaks my heart.
He is clearly anxious about it because he doesn’t like talking about it.
The only thing that works is if we get him to try at least once an hour but then he’s learning no independence with it and as soon as we stop he’s back to wetting himself.
It really seems like he doesn’t have the feeling he needs to wee.
He could probably drink more but has bowel movements at least once a day if not twice.
I just feel like we need a strategy and a plan because at the moment we’re just flailing around in the dark and possibly causing more harm.
Any ideas?
