Day time wetting 5 year old

My 5 year old is really struggling with day time wetting. He seems to only know he needs a wee when he has a small dot of wee in his pants. He never wets himself at school and has had phases of months when he wasn’t wet himself for months.

We’ve tried so many things. Rewards, timers, even trying to get him to sit on the toilet for longer when he does get wet pants to reinforce that it’s less fun to sit on the toilet for 5 mins than it is to just quickly stop your playing and go for a wee.

I just get nervous when it feels like things stray into a punishment because we don’t want to punish him and sometimes he says sorry and it breaks my heart.

He is clearly anxious about it because he doesn’t like talking about it.

The only thing that works is if we get him to try at least once an hour but then he’s learning no independence with it and as soon as we stop he’s back to wetting himself.

It really seems like he doesn’t have the feeling he needs to wee.

He could probably drink more but has bowel movements at least once a day if not twice.

I just feel like we need a strategy and a plan because at the moment we’re just flailing around in the dark and possibly causing more harm.

Any ideas?

How is he at night?

Perfect- never an issue. Always has a wee first thing in the morning.

Does he get himself to the loo after he has a 'dot' in his pants or will he just wet himself and continue whatever he's doing?

If he's dry at night it's more likely a psychological barrier or a sensory thing as you said, has he ever been checked for a uti?

He will come and tell us that he’s got wet pants then often we have to fight him to go have a wee. He’ll say he doesn’t need a wee bit we can’t get him to see the logic that off there’s wee coming out he needs to have a wee!

It’s become a bit of a battle ground.

When it’s not a battle he’ll just go and change his pants and have a wee then calmly tell us he’s had wet pants.

Your battle sounds very familiar, I was locked in one after the schools finished up there.

My GD, who has an underdeveloped bladder and sensitivity issues, she was either going to the loo for 5 minute every 15 minutes basicly whenever she felt any sensation in her bladder.

Or she would totally ignore her bladder until she couldn't hold it anymore and completely flood her drynites.

With almost no middle ground, She was doing what I asked either going to the loo if she felt she needed or hold it as long as she could, just not both. I just didn't know what to do, she was fed up and wanted to be back in nappies, so we're back to square one.

With me:

When I was 6 in a 4th Of July, best it was dark and I was inside my button white shorts! When I farted, I peed inside my button white shorts, just pee ran down my legs, due to I farted my pee inside my Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies underneath! While, I kneeled on the grass for my pee not to get into my socks and shoes! Just when I could strip of my wet shorts, I had to sob too bitterly due to that I was emotionally unambulatory to strip of my wet shorts! And when I stripped of my wet shorts, I still sobbed bitterly, due to my wet Double Blue Stripe Hanes Boxer Brief Undies were still on that I was unambulatory to strip of! While, I loved to sob that I started to cope and get over being confined inside my peed Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies! Just that I hated being bare esp outside of my Double Blue Stripe Hanes Boys Boxer Briefs, which I loved blue! Rather than be bare, I’d rather love to sob inside my peed Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies! Being bare is uncomfortable, while I’d rather get over being uncomfortable inside my peed Double Blue Stripe Boy Hanes Boxer Brief Undies! Bare is uncomfortable which I’d be comfortable to slip back on my peed Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies, and if I’m uncomfortable inside my peed Double Blue Stripe Hanes Boys Boxer Brief Undies, I’m comfortable to cry and get over it! I never smile outside my Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies! While if I’m outside of my Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies and I’m going to smile, I’d even slip on my peed Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies, even if it’s a sob and smile! By this, being bare freaks me out that I’d slip back on my peed Double Blue Stripe Boys Hanes Boxer Brief Undies, which I’ve done! I’m of profound mental retardation! The same for her!

She must love blue! Then she must love Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties, that she’ll slip on her new Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties! If she pees inside her new Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties, she just sobs and get over peeing inside her new Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties! She shouldn’t ever smile outside of her new Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties! If she’s outside of her new Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties and is gonna smile, she must even slip back on her peed Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties, even if it’s a sob and smile! Would bare freak her out thats she’d slip back on her peed Double Blue Stripe Girls Hanes Brief Panties?

We’ve never had him tested for uti- would there be other symptoms?

It makes even a small amount of urine feel like a you have a full bladder, giving a strong urge to pee and it's sore to urinate aswell.

Sophie has suffered from them her entire life, but there more common in girls, I don't know if kidney or bladder stones may be your culprit, it sound like something is making it sore for him to pee.

He doesn’t complain of any pain to wee and he says he doesn’t get any feeling that he needs to. The first feeling he has is that his pants are wet.
