Maintenance dose

We are coming to the end of our second disimpaction, this time with the help of senokot. We're currently at 4 sachets and 15ml senokot. The first time we disimpacted, we ended on 4 sachets. We've never had a solid poo and I'm not really expecting one to be honest.

What should our maintenance dose look like? The senokot has been more effective, so I'm wondering whether we should keep that at a higher dose as we reduce the movicol a bit further. I really have no idea, it's all guess work. Any advice?

Just keep going down slowly until you get a nice snake poo about 1-3 times a day and no accidents. Have you got a toilet routine in place?

I'm so nervous about going lower than 3 sachets in case it all happens again! But I'll give it a go. Yes, he does toilet time 3, sometimes 4, times a day. We bought him a vibro watch last week, so at least we're not nagging him constantly and there's a bit of novelty about it all again. We've also switched his senokot to the morning; I just don't think he's a morning pooer.

We'll keep reducing the movicol then. Should we keep the senokot at the 15ml until we have the snakes and then see how we go? It's such a fine art, this🤣

No it’s definitely a fine art you are right - I’ve just been reducing my daughters dose about a sachet down every week or so until I got to two then I kept at two for a while until I was sure the toilet routine was sound. She’s now down to one a day and I have had no problems. I intend to stay at one until I feel she’s going regularly and not withholding.

If it’s nice a slow then if you feel he’s not going for a bit you can adjust up until he’s going regularly.

Not sure what to advise with senokot as we’re not had that. But it sounds like you’re doing brilliantly keep going!

My son doesn’t do solid poo- we have to keep it very soft so he doesn’t get blocked (he recently got blocked again) so the maintenance dose is very individual I find. When reducing you can actually reduce so slowly you can take out a teaspoon at a time and just keep doing it incredibly slowly. Something like starting back at school can obvs set them back so good to watch carefully for any wobbles. I agree you’re doing great!!

Yes I’m nervous about starting school too - managed to get her into a nice routine of pooing after breakfast before we head out and 9 times out of ten she does. Hopefully that will mean she can get through the school day without going again...

I’m trying not to worry about it too much!

If I were you I wouldn’t reduce again until after getting back to school. But always best to trust your instincts- you know your child best!

Exactly! I know so much more about all this than when I started! Good luck!
