My son 3 Been on movicol for impactation for almost 2 weeks, no movement other than leakage. Doctor has now prescribed (over the phone) senna liquid 10ml daily a hour or two before bed.

Everything I've read online says the dose is way too high.

Anyone know if it is, don't want to make the situation worse by overdosing him!

It does sound high, although I know there are different guidelines for different drs. We were told not to go over 15ml for our 6 year old by our gp (we never got over 10ml), but then a paediatrician increased our maximum allowed dosage to 20ml (just in case) , so I think it depends how well the Dr understands constipation and how well they know your child and the situation.... It does seem extreme to go straight in at 10ml though, especially for a 3 year old. We started at 5ml and my daughter was 6 then.... To give some reference, the adult senna tablets are equivalent to 7.5 ml each. So, I would say its worth querying the dosage....

Thank you for your reply. It does seem very high compared to the adult dose, hes not long turned 3 too, so he's a young 3.

He's already scared of doing a poo, don't want to make it worse by giving him extreme diarrhoea so will definitely query the dose and start off with half of it and see how we go.

For a 3 year old the nice guilds state upto 15 ml of senna can be given so the dose your child is on is fine if anything you can increase if beed be.

My 3 year old was prescribed 10ml of senna by her paediatrician to help speed up her disimpaction. After a couple of weeks on 10ml it then got increased to 15ml and it really helped to speed things up. She’s now on a maintenance dose of 5ml a day.

Hiya my little boy is also 3 and he has been on movicol since the age of 12 months roughly he was prescribed senikot also about a month ago I have been giving him 5ml first thing in the morning as it take 8 hrs to work so by 2 ish he has normally started to do something but for a full clear out like he has done before I have given it to him only two to three days in a row morning and I had to shower him 3 times on 2 days after taking it he can go days without doing anything and soils all the time we started potty training 6 months ago and the wees have been fine he still has the odd accident when he forgets but the poos have been the issue he will sit on potty and try but not for long and I’ve tried all sorts to entertain him while he is on there for a while his favourite games on iPad worked but he has clocked on now and refusing sometimes to even try and poo he sits and says I’m going to wee not poo mummy! So we put a pull up on him in hope he would go on that he has a couple times but he became lazy and started weeing in them too! But he was going through pants like there was no tomorrow! It’s been so tough but he hasn’t known anything different which is sad this is all so normal for him there isn’t a day he doesn’t soil sometimes it’s little sometimes it’s a lot , 10ml seems quite high to start with I would personally start with 5 and if nothing happens then up it’s I do totally get how you feel , my boy started nursery in January and most days when I collected him he had a bag with dirty pants on I hope your little one is able to clear out with the help on senikot good luck x

My daughter was 2 when she was prescribed senna and she was 2.5ml now she’s 4 and is on 7.5ml so I do say straight in at 10ml without you’re dr or paediatric dr seeing him is abit much x

Trust your instincts ☺️ From my point of view impaction can cause more problems than taking 10ml Senna but I agree with the others, you can always try 5ml first and step it up gradually- good luck! Are you also upping the movicol at the same time?
