Pooping small and often, help please

Hi there, I'm new to the site and am looking for some advice. My son is 3yrs 7mths and is being checked for autism and has development delay. He had constipation when he was about a year old and was taking laxido to help. This went on for a year or so but he ended up with a distended tummy and lots of wind. Advised by dr to take him off it to see how things go. Now he has not used it for a while and he is now pooping about 10 times a day. They are all very small soft poops that stays between is bum cheeks. it's not always obvious to know he has done something and because he is very active and at nursery, the friction and poop mixture is causing him to have almost constant nappy rash. His bum is so painful with the sores. Should I start him on the laxido again to see if he starts pooping once a day instead of 10 to give his wee cheeks a break?
