Bedwetting in 8 yr old. Desmopressin and bed alarm not helping

My son is 8 and for about the last two years he's wet the bed every night, we resorted back to pull ups and these were soaking.

After undergoing assessment for ASC we have managed to get prescribed desmopressin melts, one per night. We have been doing this for three weeks and using a bed alarm. In three weeks we have had 4 dry nights so an improvement. On the nights that he is not dry he wakes between 2am and 3am generally. He's not keen on the alarm due to his sensory profile and just comes running. He has his last drink generally with his dinner, defo not after 7pm and desmopressin at 9pm.

It's definitely just a bedwetting issue, our daughter has chronic kidney disease and has bladder problems associated with that and he doesn't have any of those it's just wetting the bed.

Sorry for my long first post! Any help or advice would be appreciated

Hi Robrees, which dose is he on (240 mcg is the max). Does your son take Desmomelts just before bed? We were advised to take them an hour before as the body is apparently still producing urine for up to an hour after taking them and it did make a difference. Also, does he double void before bed?

My daughter is 9 and we have tried all sorts and not completely there yet. The alarm didn’t work for us (have tried twice), she is a really deep sleeper. Desmomelts were also not enough for her on their own but oxybutnin (slow release) and Desmomelts together do keep her dry. She has been diagnosed as having an overactive bladder. We have reduced the dose of each medication now down to the lowest possible doses and are about to try cutting one medication out altogether to see what happens.

There is no easy and quick answer unfortunately and medication doesn’t cure the problem, it only helps manage it. It’s been the bain of our life for years now. My daughter has a sleepover party at the weekend and it’s the first one we are trying without pull-ups (medication only) which I’m secretly anxious about but hopefully will be fine.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, He is taking 120mg and about an hour before bed sometimes more his sleep pattern isn't great. Last night was better in the fact he woke at 5am not 2am.

Im making him go to the toilet but not double, he's very literal due to his autism so for him he's been once he doesn't need to try again.

I shall keep trying. I don't think it's anything like overactive bladder etc, we had all that with oldest daughter she also took oxybutin for day time wetting.

Maybe I was being impatient and expected a result instantly and actually we are getting a result just one that wake the house up but it is an improvement.

Thanks again

Unfortunately I cannot offer any advice, however we are in a similar situation with our 8 year old son. He has been wet every night for over a year now and we have been to the GP but they do not seem very interested. We brought a bed wetting alarm and have been using it for almost 2 weeks with the alarm going off once a night.

I am wondering if there are any more assessments I should request or medication options?

Thanks!

Hi,

The desmopressin stops urine being produced for a set time. It's a melt we are using that goes under his tongue.

Again GP not that bothered, it's more my little bit that's bothered. The 2/3am wake up call from the alarm is a killer though!
