My son also had problems since he was a baby and was on movicol for years. About 18 months ago he was put on senna and we have found it really helpful. We were told the senna helped the muscles in the rectum work better so they will help the child push all the poo out rather than soften it. My son was initially on 10 ml but is now on less than 2.5ml and we just increase it if he gets constipated again.

Good luck
