HI, just joined the group. Looking for some tips on how to help my 8 yr old to stop bed wetting and pooping his trouser during the day. I am at my wits end and seriously do not know what else to do! :(

Hi Hun, I really feel for you as my 8yr old boy is wetting the bed also, it's not every night but he doesn't seem to know he's wet until his woken up, I have tried getting him up just before I go to bed and getting him to go to the toilet which does work, also cutting out any drinks after 7.00pm but earlier if necessary, star charts which I'm sure you'd heard of before, sometimes they work if there is a reward at the end but if his problem is medical it's very difficult as its not their fault. As for the soiling during the day, he may be withholding or trying to control when it comes out as my older son still does this and he is 10, he does have an intolerance to certain drinks that literally come out the same colour (sorry TMI) but sometimes he is so engrossed in what he's doing and holds on to the very last minute but then he can't make it to the toilet on time which could be what's happening to your little one. It might be worth you making a poo diary of when they go and what kind of poo they do sorry again TMI but if they were to go a see a specialist, they ask that you do this and it gives them a good idea of what their bowel habits are, whether they are constipated or loose etc, I'm no expert but a mum of three and they all different especially their toilets, I have had to do plenty of wee and poo diaries, my daughter is a regular visitor in one of the London hospitals, she sees the bladder nurses and they are fantastic, good luck, if you feel your not winning, maybe an idea to go to the GP who could offer some medication or refer you to a specialist xxx

Hi. Know you are not alone..I was at my Whitstable end and felt a failure as my son is 8 years old aswell. He has accidents and I now know it's because he was so bunged up its a natural over flow . His bowel and intestines wasn't working properly so when had wind or ran he seeped and soiled himself. If a sock was full of rocks and you then put smaller ones in , and then smaller again and then sand and then poured water in..the water would seep round the gaps and even spill out. Aparently over flow is like that. In my soname case his fresh pooh had no where to go as he was so compacted and therefore it seeped out causing accidents. The hard part is as a parent we don't realise it's a natural and medical problem. Go.to your Dr and they should be able to help. You can print of a Bristols pooh chart with the 7 types . The aim is to be and stay at number 4. You can encourage your child with a pooh star chart, and a drinks cart or a toilet chart and have it in the bathroom so he puts a sticker on it every time he goes. The more stickers the better a priizero and you can agree on what the prizes are. It may be extra computer time or a game of 4's what ever works. Also have a distraction near the toilet. I put some fridges spinners in there. I've seen a light that changes cour and sit's under the seat so it makes using the loo fun as it changes colours. After my son's groin op I scrowed paper up to aim his own personal water hose at. Eg aim your wee to the paper ball target. Lots of praise also helps. The more your son feels in control and owns using the bathroom helps. Keep it light hearted and fun , like any other hurdle or challenge no different from a reading challenge. Encourage him to talk about it and how he feels freely. Normalise the bathroom activities with him.. Remember it's more common than you realise. I've also found out 3 of my close friends had issues as kids and 2 had siblings with issues and I don't mix much so don't know many people. Also be kind to yourself as the more uptight we as also parent get the more uptight our child gets almond then it's a cycle downwards. So try and make sure you get support and don't focus too much on blame, take it 1 day at a time. It will get better and easier. Sharon.
