Help!!

My son is 5 and at the start of the new school year stopped going for a poop! I’ve had the Movicol I’ve had the medicines laxatives you name it. Back and forward to the docs feel like banging my head off a wall. Last week he was cramped up in pain couldn’t move so they stopped all his medicines and since hasn’t been in 8 days. Back to square one. When he was going it was only really little accidents in his pants hardly anything on the loo! Says when he try’s to go he can’t and it hurts... I’m worried it’s going to affect his school and he’s very embarrassed about it. I’ve rang the docs this morning & they’ve told me to start 3 Movicol sachets a day again... feel like we are back to square one help!!

Have you tried Laxido? You can buy it over the counter. It helps the poop absorb water, we now just put half a sachet in my daughters drink & it keeps a normal poop for her. She was having problems with big hard poos when she changed to cows milk. now she deliberately tries to keep it in as she is afraid it will hurt her, rather than giving extra sachets so its runny (we dont want her to be having accidents either) we give her a full one if she hasnt gone that day, but a half every other day....of course you may have to start with two just to get bowels moving but after that you can find what works best for you. Hope that helps. x

Thanks for you advice. Thy have put him back on 2 Movicol a day which is hard for school as I don’t want him to be in pain or have accidents at school. Don’t think we have tried that one. Will have a go. Thank you!

Perhaps ask the gp if you can give him sodium picosulphate as this really clears them out but doesn't involve having to drink large amounts of movicol. This is what our old gp prescribed for a clear out when my daughter was 3.

Clear outs are messy though, can you do it over half term?

I'm also having the same issue. My 5yr old son has been constipated on and off for 1.5 yrs now. Recently we has him going regular 3 times a week compared to once every 2/3 weeks. However an emotional change seems to trigger his episodes as I had to fly to Scotland for a family bereavement and it has set him back. He is on 1/2 sachet of Laxido every day but for 2 weeks now having over spill in his pants, he has passed some small poos but still having the over spill. He is terrified to sit on the loo for fear of it hurting and is really upset every day. Its breaking my heart and wish there was something more i can do for him, he just doesnt understand that letting it out will help. School has been really good and has set him his own toilet to go to should he feel the need, and in there is a drawer with changeable clothes, pants etc with wipes and bags to put stiff in. Might be worth asking your school for something similar. Being the parent of a constipated child is tough work and I try to tell myself that we got through it once we can do it again, I hope you get some help and your child some relief.
