Erectile dysfunction and the risk of prostate cancer.

New study below [1].

I usually post in the Advanced Prostate Cancer group, but this new study might be more helpful here.

Over the past 13 years, I have become convinced that PCa is a metabolic disease. Men with PCa have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease & are likely to have some of the symptoms of the metabolic syndrome [MetS]. The same is true for ED. A recent paper reviews the evidence [2].

In the new study:

"In total, 5858 and 23432 patients were enrolled in the ED and non-ED cohorts, respectively." "Compared with patients without ED, those with organic ED had a 1.27-fold higher risk of PCa."

"ED is a harbinger of PCa in some men. Physicians should consider the possibility of occult PCa in patients with ED regardless of age and comorbidities."

One of the symptoms of Mets is fasting triglycerides >150 mg/dL. I think we should aim for triglycerides < 100 mg/dL.

A useful rule is that triglycerides should be no more than twice HDL-cholesterol. The ratio is a surrogate for insulin resistance. I aim for triglycerides close to the HDL number.

Triglycerides cannot be controlled while on a high-carb low fat diet. The Mediterranean diet has been demonstrated to lower cardiovascular disease risk. It also shows promise in Mets. It is a 40% fat diet (commonly olive oil). That will seem like a high number to many in our fat-phobic society, but the U.S. food pyramid has proven to be a disaster.

A number of male chronic health issues that become common with age have common causes. Rather than drift into these diseases, we should become aware of our exposure by reviewing MetS symptoms. If triglycerides are high, control might improve overall health (including erections) & reduce PCa risk. IMO
