Is this a simple partial aware seizure?

I don't know what just happened to me. It was nothing like most anxiety I've experienced.

I was sat on my sofa, enjoying a film. Out of nowhere, I had this huge head rush feeling and a massive burst of anxiety. It lasted about a second. My neck tingled, my head felt like it lost its balance.

Normally I would say that this is just classic anxiety or a panic attack, but it lasted for a second or two. I obviously had the after anxiety but in the moment that it happened, it was like being hit by a truck.

I'm freaking out, because I've had epilepsy investigated in the past because I was having deja vu flashbacks, it was ruled as not being epilepsy a few months ago.

Hi

Thank you for your message. This sounds like a scary experience for you.

The are lots of different types of seizures (epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures-explained), with a really wide variety of symptoms.

The symptoms of anxiety (epilepsy.org.uk/info/health-matters/anxiety) – particularly panic attacks – can look and feel a lot like the symptoms of some types of epileptic seizure. This means that both conditions can be misdiagnosed. Some people with epilepsy are told they are having panic attacks, when they are actually experiencing seizures. And some people with panic attacks are wrongly diagnosed with epilepsy.

It would be a good idea to speak to doctor about this new symptom, and whether they think its fits with your current diagnosis.

I hope you hear from others on this platform, as sharing information and experiences can be a good idea. Can I just check you also know about our other services?

We have our virtual support groups epilepsy.org.uk/virtual-groups. We have our forum4e online community forum.epilepsy.org.uk/, and we are on facebook facebook.com/epilepsyaction and twitter twitter.com/epilepsyaction.

Finally, please feel free to contact our helpline team. You can either email helpline@epilepsy.org.uk or phone the Epilepsy Action Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. Our helpline is open Monday to Tuesday 8.30am until 700pm, Wednesday to Friday 8.30am until 4.30pm and Saturday 10.00am until 4.00pm.
