GP was unable to remove my mirena yesterday. She is referring me back to hospital with my pain anyway so said they would deal with it there. Any ideas or experiences of how they do this would be appreciated so I know what to expect. Thank you x

Various reasons for this. the most common being that your uterus has swallowed up the strings or the strings were cut too short for the GP to get enough grip on them to pull it out.

The hospital gynae clinics have better equipment than an ordinary surgery to get them removed.

In some cases, likes mine, where the mirena is installed inside a deformed uterus it requires a general anaesthetic to be removed and replaced too. As the doc needs to use ultrasound scans to locate the beast, and then the specialist equipment to remove it and then scans again to ensure the new one goes where it is supposed to go.

Certainly not something I can cope with having done without substantial anaesthetic.

Another possibility in rare cases is that the mirena has migrated up a fallopian tube, it's only a tiny thing. Or possibly punctured its way out of the uterus wall in some extremely rare occasions.

For most women it is a string thing.

Too short or hoovered up in to the uterus by the cervix muscles.

If having a speculum in for the procedure to locate the strings is too painful, and it might be, then tell them to stop.

You can ask to have gas and air (entonox) and pain killers to help you through the experience, and in more complicated cases you can have a general anaesthetic.

Hi

My GP tried to remove my mirena coil but couldnt as my strings were to short, i had mine removed when i had my lap done seven weeks best thing ever, never like it . I think hospital can do it as they have better equipment and also they can sedate if need to, im sure it will be fine and dont worry about it, Good luck
