hi all, thanks for the support on the last post I took your advise and went back to my doctors and pushed for further investigation. I’ve got a trans abdominal and trans vaginal scan coming up which I’m a bit nervous for. I’ve never had any procedures like this before so was wondering if anyone else has had this and can give me an insight into what I can expect. I was also wondering if anyone knows what the likely hood of this actually detecting something wrong is? I’m just as worried about them not finding anything as I am about them finding something. Any info would be much appreciated thank you
trans-abdominal scans: hi all, thanks for... - Endometriosis UK
trans-abdominal scans

It depends.
They only look at the uterus and ovaries. So if you have adenomyosis you have about 50-60% chance of having something found. It can also detect endometriomas but don't have any statistics on this.
And this depends on the skill of the sonographer.
So they can find nothing and you can still have endo and/or adeno simply because the sonographer isn't skilled enough or more likely it simply can't be seen on ultrasound.
Hi Cinnabun, It's totally normal to feel anxious about the procedures if you've never experienced it before.
These are probably the 2 less invasive of those I've received.
Trans abdominal is across the lower tummy, like a pregnancy scan. They look for both your ovaries/cysts and if they struggle for a clear picture, then it will change to trans vaginally. This can be quite painful, not unbearable for me. If at all it becomes too much you can ask for them to stop.
Thankfully the sonographer was well versed and was able to find the large endometriomas.
I had a abdominal and transvaginal scan this week and was found to have endo. The abdominal scan was fine, as others have said just like a pregnancy scan. Not invasive at all, just a bit of jelly on your stomach.
The transvaginal scan was fine for me and didn't hurt at all. They put a probe inside you into your vaginal canal. At times it was a little bit uncomfortable but I wouldn't say painful. Comparing to a cervical screen I felt this was a lot less uncomfortable. In this one, they was able to see my ovary and uterus was adhered which is how I got my diagnosis.
I was able to go back to work afterwards without any issues as it was a midday appointment.
