Push for MRI

I've had issues with my periods for over 10 yearsI have extremely heavy bleeding where I can change an Ultra tampon in the upstairs bathroom and by the time I am downstairs I have leaked through. Periods last 7 days with 4 days being very very heavy and massive clots.

They are very painful and I also have pelvic and leg pain during this time.

I bleed and have pain during ovulation. Pain sometimes during sex.

Urination and bowel movements are extremely painful during my period.

I had a laparoscopy last week at a BSGE centre with an endo specialist but no endo was found. Even the consultant said he was surprised.

They did put a Mirena in too which I am hoping helps.

I am wondering if it could be adenomyosis and if I should push for an MRI to look for it. I don't know if I will even see my consultant again so not sure how I go about doing this.

Thanks

Hey,

Sorry you're having a rough time and struggling for answers.

The most effective tool for the diagnosis of adenomyosis would be a transvaginal ultrasound scan. You can sometimes see it on MRI, but this is less reliable.

Sometimes a hysteroscopy can give an indication if adenomyosis is present, but this is limited as it only assesses the endometrial surface of the uterus.

Hopefully, they haven't discharge you from the BSGE centre yet! Definitely request a TVS, luckily the wait times for these are much much less, just make sure it's a sonographer that has training to recognise adenomyosis.

Hope this helps! X

Thank you, I had a TVS in December but it wasn't by a specialist so will ask again for another with someone with training.

I emailed my consultant’s secretary to push for an MRI Scan but also your GP can write a letter to them asking for one xx

Thank you, I'll see if I can find their details and then see what the plan of action is next. He did mention it could be adenomyosis at my first appt but was so sure it would be endometriosis he said we focus on getting that diagnosis.

push for MRI or CT scan. It’s actually CT scan that detected my Adenomyosis. Keep coming back to GP whenever you feel that something is not working and the pain is still persistent. Don’t give up, keep showing up and ask for whatever you feel you need. Keep letting them know it’s serious and it’s not going away. From my experience I can tell that it was actually me that made things happen by keep showing up at the GP, asking for tests to be done to exclude other things. I had a whole year of so many tests, I was even referred to Rapid Diagnosic Cancer Clinic twice, had Colonoscopy X-Ray of ribs and spine and many more all to exclude other issues so they can really focus on Endometriosis or Adenomyosis.Yes, push for MRI or CT scan. I’m still awaiting Laparoscopy, I am on the list since end of November last year. In the mean time hormonal treatment and all kind of painkillers. I’m happy to give a little bit of advise based on that I’ve gone through for the past year. Most importantly don’t give up and TRY not to worry. Everything you CAN do is a step forward. And you can do a lot. Good Luck! Don’t give up 😊

I would push for mri. I had ultrasound and internal ultrasound and was just suspected. I had lap surgery in jan and couldnt do anything due to it being so severe. I found out just how bad after my mri and now waiting for hysterctomy

I would push for an MRI as this finally found fibroids huge ones in my womb which caused heavy bleeding. I got a hysteroscopy to remove them general anaesthetic outpatient procedure. I’m back on here though as after a year of being somewhat normal I’ve just had 4 days straight of heavy bleeding with huge clots I’m so low and worried the fibroids have started to form again. So I’ll be going back to the GP and pushing for another MRI or CT as I’m not waiting. It’s like a murder scene so much blood and it’s so worrying. I suffer with anemia so I’m sure I’m dangerously low now on iron. Ultra sound did not pick anything up both in and out but they may suggest that first sometimes you kind of have to jump through their hoops to get the result. I refuse to have the coil as I’ve bled so much I’m sure it would get rejected out my body. Hope you get the help you need and be persistent.

Thanks all so much for your comments. The coil was expelled last week with horrendous blood loss and clots. Was put on Norethisterone to stop the bleeding but now I'm off it again I'm bleeding again but thankfully just 'normal' heavy. Spoke yo consultants secretary and as I have already been discharged back to GP she needs to speak to him to see if he is happy to see me again. I can tell my iron is ridiculously low as my restless legs are something else.
