In the same old nightmare again!!!!

Good evening lovely people, sorry this is long but I need to get it off my chest. I’ve just got home after two and a half days in hospital with yet another infection caused by endo that gave me my third bout of sepsis!!! I spent Saturday night in a&e and the team were fantastic. It was when I was admitted that the same old mismanagement started. I had taken all my recent correspondence from my bsge team and mri results as I’m due for major surgery in three weeks time. The consultant I saw did seem to be listening and took down details of the pain meds etc I’m on, read and took copies of my notes and put me on a three antibiotic IV regime for sepsis, three times a day that I’ve had before so knew what to expect. However when it came to the time for pain meds and antibiotics he hadn’t put it on the system as in his department they are still paper based!!!! I was consequently left crying out in agony for 12 hours and missed the second dose of antibiotics with the poor frustrated nurses going round the hospital and on the phone to his registras trying to sort it while they still had a ward full of other patients to look after. The poor nurses kept apologising and were so frustrated and distressed that they couldn’t help me. I told them it wasn’t their fault and legally they couldn’t risk their careers by prescribing meds themselves. Why is something so simple as all using the same digital system still not being implemented. The nursing team were so on the ball and working so hard but a consultant earning a much bigger salary than them was not doing the simplest part of his job to enable them to do theirs. I couldn’t get to my specialist centre as it is so far away and I needed to go quickly to the closest a&e and was far too sick to travel for hours. Luckily my specialist nurse has given me a direct number to contact her in an emergency and she just couldn’t believe it. Thank goodness I knew that the antibiotics were due three times a day but dread to think what would have happened to someone on their first experience as sepsis can accelerate so fast, it was terrifying. Thankfully I’m now home on oral antibiotics and able to control my own pain relief but still very poorly, feeling sick from meds and with a swollen abdomen that looks like I could give birth at any moment. So uncomfortable and painful. I just needed to share this evening to get it all out and reinforce the message that we all still need to push and speak up for ourselves even when it is totally draining and we feel so weak and poorly. Never doubt yourselves lovely brave people as you are probably more ‘on it ‘ when it comes to this disease than the general gynaecologists.I’m even too weak to talk tonight. At least I know how lucky I am to be having my surgery with a specialist team. That’s it, got it off my chest and if you have managed to reach the end of my rant I thank you for allowing me this safe space to let it out to those that understand. I’m going to contact PALS when I’m less emotional and have the energy as I dread this happening to anyone else. Poppy ☀️
