hi all, I’m just looking for some advice really. Basically a few years ago I was under the gynaecologist team in the old city where I lived. They suspected that I had endometriosis but this has never been confirmed. Two years ago I moved towns so got discharged from them and haven’t seen my local gynaecology team as of yet. Basically my symptoms were: very, very heavy periods, stomach pain (throughout the month), bleeding out my bum whilst on my period and pain during and after sex.
A few months ago, I had intercourse for the first time in a couple of years and a few hours later I started my period even though I wasn’t due to start for another three weeks and had basically just finished a period. Today, I had a smear done. This was the worst pain I’ve ever had, I literally cried whilst at the doctors. But since then I’ve been bleeding and now I think I’ve started a period, as I’m having stomach cramps and all the usual symptoms even though I’m not meant to start for another two weeks. The nurse that did the smear said that I have a polyp, she briefly mentioned I could get this removed but tbh I was in that much pain with the procedure, I didn’t ask any questions. Basically, I’m looking for advice. Has anyone had a polyp removed before? How painful is it? And do you think I need to see a GP? Any advice would be welcome 😊

Hi there, I had a few polyps removed around 2 years ago at my local hospital. You can ask for a general anaesthetic if you’re not good with pain. The nurses gave me a microwaveable hot water bottle during the procedure which helped immensely as I opted not to go for GA.
It was as painful as having period cramps. You are advised to take pain killers before the procedure to help with the pain.
hi, sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I had a polyp discovered long before I was diagnosed with endo/adeno (it took 8.5 years to get a diagnosis). The polyp was the worst pain I have ever felt!! It caused tremendous pain when I was examined. When I went to have it removed st the hospital the nurses refused to complete the procedure (thank god) as they said it was too big to removed and I’d need a general. I was told later that the reason it caused such painful periods was that my body was trying to naturally expel it. I’d definitely suggest pushing to get it removed. I had instant relief once it was gone. Good luck! x
Polyps and bleeding often go together, but definitely merit a specialist opinion and a conversation with your GP in the meanwhile. I had an ablation and polyp removal, but under general anaesthesia. Less pain than period pain afterwards, and I felt much less like I was perpetually premensrtual or trying to give birth!
Hi there, I had my polyps removed just under a year ago. I struggled with bleeding in between my periods. I did it under General anaesthetic but apparently it can be done without it too. The bleeding went away after the removal.
However , the polyps seem to have returned ( from my latest scan) and my bleeding between periods has started again. Waiting for another hysteroscopy and also for a laparoscopy for “suspected endometriosis”.
