Zoladex- Being told too young

Hi lovelies

This is a bit of a frustrating one and long so sorry in advance- my consultant has request that I try Zoladex for 3 months before having surgery, which have been waiting for since 2021.

My issue is in order for me to have the injection It has to administered by a nurse at the drs surgery. So i went to the drs today to arrange this to only be told by the Gp that this shouldn't be offered out to me as i am too young (30). My GP is refusing to give it to me till she has spoken to my consultant.

I have shown her proof of all letters sent to the surgery for this to happen but she has point blank refused. I am just wondering has anyone else had any issues ?

Sorry to hear this. I had 6 months of zoladex at 26 before surgery with no issue. Could your consultant contact GP to confirm? Sorry to hear you're having such a wait.

The guidelines recommend no teenagers should take zoladex but at 30 you should be ok particularly as it's only for 3 months. To be honest I would try to battle through without it for 3 months. It does calm things prior to surgery but it puts you in chemical menopause which has a lot of side effects without Addback HRT. Unless you are in agony or hemorrhaging daily, I wouldn't do it.

Agree with this, especially as it's only for 3 months. I was put on Zoladex for one year before my op, but then Covid happened and I didn't have my op or Zoladex for another (so Zoladex for one year, one year without and then op) and the surgeon then said it didn't matter. The menopause effects were not particularly pleasant either, and I say that as someone who is starting to experience non-chemical menopause now.

I’ve had Zoladex (28) and the endometriosis nurses did it at the hospital, if that would be better.

Have you been diagnosed by scan - do you know how severe your endo is?

You should definitely be able to have it. I had my first round when I was 26/27, just about to start my second round of Zoladex at 29. It definitely works, just didn't work long term for me so have to start again.

What absolute rubbish! How dare they say that to you and jeopardise your surgery plans. I had zoladex treatment 3 times. My doctors are a pain. They stopped the hrt I was given by the hospital that went with the zoladex because I had a hysterectomy. They didn’t wait to see what hospital recommended, which was to continue for 5 years. I had to argue to get it back. As a result of complications from the hysterectomy I have a temporary colostomy bag, they even stop me ordering more bags so I have to go to the hospital and beg the clinic for more! They even stop me ordering inhalers. They say all prescriptions have to be authorised by a GP, they have to agree you can have it even if it’s hospital perscribed. They even get a clinical pharmacist to approve it. If they say no, tough. Doctors shouldn’t be allowed to do this. Could you call your consultants secretary and explain what they said? I wouldn’t let them get away with it. Good luck.

hey - how frustrating! My daughter is 18 and receiving zoladex from GP for 3 months ( has been really helpful) I would get your gynae service to talk to GP as others have said - so unfair nothing is straightforward

Hi, my daughter had Zoladex at 26 for 2 years then stopped for 2 years and is going back on it tomorrow at age 31 as symptoms have returned , she is too obese for surgery ( although she wants a hysterectomy to put an end to suffering ) so they gave her the Zoladex as she didn't want a coil, and the bleeding was so severe she needed iron infusions , it is a very strong drug used as a type of chemo for prostate and breast cancer , it is not without side effects and maybe your GP feels it unsuitable if you are on any other meds etc, but nevertheless it works for my daughter, it stopped her periods after a few months, so ring your consultant/ secretary, as my daughter has to go to hospital for her injection either monthly or 3 monthly, so maybe they can arrange that for you instead . hope this helps x

In my opinion the zoladex was rubbish. It didn’t do anything for me but give me a really heavy period.

It’s supposed to put your ovaries into a menopause state but without the estrogen you will feel awful.

I’m 53 and 3 years post menopause and still have endometriosis pain.
