I’ve just had a letter to my doctors following an MRI scan I had a few weeks ago. I was previously diagnosed with endometriosis in 2015 and this year they have suspected adenomyosis. I don’t understand the scan report and anticipate it will be a while before I get a follow up appointment. The letter says: it shows posterior junctional zone widening which may represent secretory phase adenomyosis. It also says the parametrial vessels may suggest venous congestion. Anybody any ideas what this could mean? I am very confused and also can’t understand why it doesn’t mention endometriosis. Any help or advice would be really appreciated thank you so much!

Adenomyosis is closely associated with endo but is in the uterine wall only. It sounds like they are mainly seeing this and may not be able to significantly observe the endo.
The bulkiness of the uterus builds in various different ways sometimes more like lumps, some more diffuse and the thickening bleeds. There are different types which they haven’t fully identified or understood. It used to be only identified by biopsy of the uterine wall once a hysterectomy had been completed. The bulk of the tissue can cause interference with blood flow increasing both pain, swelling and problems with the tissue getting a poor blood supply in the pelvis when it becomes really engorged. The location of the area they are reporting on is the back of the uterus ie closer to your spine.
If you think endo is poorly understood then adenomyosis is even worse. You can have either alone or both at the same time .
