Laparoscopy - Uterine perforation

6 weeks ago I had a laparoscopy to investigate pelvic pain that was believed to be endometriosis. A small amount of endo tissue was found on the pouch of Douglas but was not removed. To this day I don’t have an answer as to why it was left there but I assume it may be due to the complicated area.

During my procedure I unfortunately had a complication. A perforation of my uterus occurred during the dilation, which leads me to believe my ‘simple’ op became quite risky very quickly.

6 weeks on, I have been offered the mirena coil for symptoms as it couldn’t be fitted during the op due to the complication. However, I am unsure if this is too early considering my uterus is still healing.

I have lost all faith in my doctors after a terrible experience in hospital under there care. Any advice would be appreciated re. The healing time of the perforation and the risk of the IUD.

I have previously been on the mini pill however it has provided no symptom relief.

Hi I don’t feel I can offer much help. I would also feel doubtful in your situation. I can only say if I were you I would be after a second opinion. Also make sure you see someone who specialises in endo. I feel like its pretty reasonable to raise these concerns to your GP or direct to your surgeons secretary???

I’m so sorry you have had to go through this. I had my laparoscopy in November 2021. They found a blocked tube and while trying to flush it they perforated my uterus. The recovery was a lot harder than I had expected and I assume this was due to the perforation. I already have the coil in when I had my surgery so I am not entirely sure how long you should wait. Was the perforation near your cervix area? If so I would say wait a few months to ensure it is healed properly. If it was in a different place you may be ok to have it fitted. I will say though it is not a comfortable experience having the coil in. Take ibuprofen before and after and have a hot water bottle handy. I usually get loads of my favourite snacks to munch after to make me feel better. Sorry I don’t think I’ve been much help but feel free to message me about anything xx
