I was recently admitted to the hospital for a few days with severe pain, vomiting, fainting spells and rectal bleeding. I explained I was on the waiting list for Laparoscopy to diagnose endo and that was period was starting when I went into the hospital. I went into A&E and they said it could be a really bad flare up of Endo so they referred me up to the Gynaecology department. but they said the rectal bleeding was nothing to do with it so they sent be back tot he ward.
After I was discharged I saw posts about the bleeding and Endo being link. Has anyone else experienced this or know if it could be linked and I should list it as a symptom???
I just didn't get a lot of answers 😔
Thanks ❤️

I don't really have an answer but I'm curious about this as well... I have haemorrhoids which always get swollen and bleed at the start of my period and I'm beginning to wonder if the two are connected. What makes me think this is even more likely is that going on the combined pill has affected them also.
From what I've read on this forum and elsewhere, you can have endometrial tissue in the rectum and I suppose that the main difference from other sites is that the blood would actually have somewhere to exit.
Yeah there’s nothing really clear about it. Half the people I saw at the hospital said it was linked to endo and half said it had nothing to do with it. It’s just left me with loads of questions.
i hope you’re doing better. i’ve recently been going to the doctor for potential endometriosis and my doctor asked about blood in stool. he said it’s possible the tissue can spread to the bladder or anus. this might not have happened to you but i thought i’d share since it could be helpful! x
Hi,I have endo in my bowel and I have suffered from rectal bleeding during my period. Even though they couldn't find anything when they looked with a camera, they said it is possible that it's coming through the intestinal wall and out that way. I don't experience it at any other time.
Sorry to hear what your going through. My specialist has mentioned the possibility of Finding Endo in my bowel because of the issues I've had. But no one can give any definite answers
Hi IszabellaI’m sorry you’ve been in so much pain. I have stage 4 rectovaginal endometriosis. I was diagnosed aged 37, but had been having bleeding from my bum during my period since I was 17.
I never told the GP as I just thought it was normal. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-30s and started getting severe endometriosis pain that I told her after seeing it listed as a symptom on the endometriosis UK website. I also used to get other bowel symptoms which were misdiagnosed as IBS.
The GP referred me for a colonoscopy to investigate which didn’t show anything.
I do also have haemorrhoids which bleed occasionally but that is a different kind of bleeding where it is kind of surface bleeding if that makes sense. The bleeding that I have related to the endo is only during my period and is more blood.
I have also had bleeding from my bum for other reasons, like one time I had an anal fissure. But the GP was able to tell that was what it was.
You might want to check with endometriosis UK but my understanding is that endometriosis involving the bowel is classed as stage 4 and you should be referred to an endometriosis specialist and this can be done direct from a GP.
I was initially seen at my local gynaecology unit and they told me I didn’t have endo because I wasn’t in pain all the time before the time of the laparoscopy. (I was in pain all the time soon after.) unfortunately my local gynaecology unit didn’t seem to have a great understanding of endometriosis and I don’t tell her about the rectal bleeding as I didn’t realise it was a symptom.
On doing the laparoscopy they discovered I had stage 4 endo and I was referred for an MRI before seeing the specialist. The specialist endo consultant was amazing and I was soon able to go back to work before having an operation that has given me many years pain free. Although on a waiting list for another op now.
Again, my understanding is that you should get an MRI before the laparoscopy but worth checking with endometriosis UK website. Endo doesn’t always show up on an MRI, but mine did and it would have saved me a surgery and time on a waiting list.
Either way, I’d go back to the GP and let them know that you’re concerned about the bleeding from the bum. Bleeding from your bum can absolutely be a symptom of endometriosis so I would definitely tell doctors about it.
I have seen a specialist and my local private hospital and she was really good and talked to me about all the possibilities. But unfortunately she couldn't give any definitive answers there and then to what the problem is. I have always had pain in my bowel, since my period started.
Next time I go to the doctors I will definitely raise my concerns about this, I haven't had the chance to mention this to my specialist yet. As soon as I get an appointment I will
Just saw the responses to this and posted a similar question. My haemmharoids (if that's what they are) do sometimes have spot bleeding when I wipe, but just before and during my period there is more blood and sometimes it also looks like period blood (more viscous). They get very swollen just before my period too and the pain in my rectum feels similar to period cramps, which is another reason why I think they are linked.
Hi I have been trying for the last 6 years to get some answers. After 2 x laparoscopies, MRI, flexi sigmoidoscopy and full colonoscopy, I was told there is nothing wrong it is just something you’ll have. I got to a point where my only option was to go private. Thank goodness I did. On the recommendation of a friend I saw a very good Endo specialist consultant, had a detailed MRI and have been diagnosed with both endo and adenomyosis with the possibility of bowel penetration. I have got a consultation with a colorectal surgeon on Saturday (private) to see if I will have to have bowel resection as well as a hysterectomy. The endo consultant said if anything is linked to your menstrual cycle it is more likely than not to be endo or adenomyosis. Definitely list it as a symptom
