Just wondering about others experience with mefenamic acid. Had an appointment with my consultant last week who prescribed but was quite clear it was only for two weeks. Currently waiting for another appointment with a specialist. But why is it only prescribed for two weeks? Can it be taken for longer? I know I’ll need to speak to the GP but whilst I’m impatient in the meantime, I thought I’d ask here. Any help appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Hi, I was prescribed Tranexamic acid for 4 days then I was told to speak to my GP. My consultant wrote to my GP to ask him to prescribe Tranexamic acid every month & it’s not been an issue. I just have to request a repeat prescription. Hope this helps.
I had mefenamic acid for about a year , GP prescribed it for pain relief but it wasn’t hugely helpful . I’ve had tranexamic acid for about a year now , it seems to help with the bleeding in that it stops clots and therefore reduces pain slightly . Both have been GP prescribed and no time limit was ever put on mine .
Mefenamic Acid (Ponstan) is an anti-inflammatory similar to( Neurofen )and can have effects on stomach and kidneys. If you need to take it take Losec, Lanzoprazole etc. Women of child bearing age should restrict it' s use. Maybe that is why the gp only prescribed for a short period.
I take it for a few days at the beginning of my period as that is when my pain is at its worse and it seems to help. Unsure why it would only be prescribed for 2 weeks though
