To try GnRHa‘a or not!?

Hi all,

My head is a mess on what to do, I’ve finally got back to a consultant to try and deal with my endo (was diagnosed nearly 10 years ago) He wants me to try the menopause injections rather than surgery but I’ve push to be added to the waitlist for surgery whilst I had time to process the idea of the injections and he did agree to that.

I’m just unsure if the injections are going to help as I already feel a crazy person, with memory problems, fatigue and lack of motivation, partly due to running a business through the pandemic whilst living with endo & being single.

I’d love to try the holistic way of diet & supplements but my life pressures won’t allow it fully so I can try it but it only works on the “good week” of the month, which I’m sure most of you can relate to.

I’ve read that 3 months of the injections can be as good as 6 months.. and if it’s a case of coping with the side effects for 3 months and then maybe BC will work I think I can do it. But what’s scarying me is the possibility of other health conditions that then stay around. I also need to lose weight, I’ve put 2 stone on through the pandemic but needed to lose a couple rather than put it on so I can’t risk more weight gain 🙈

Any advise or experiences would be much appreciated 😊

Hey, hope you’re doing alright. I can empathise with your feelings - endo is just as much a mental challenge as a physical one and it can be so hard to know what to do for the best!

In terms of decisions about treatment, it’s gonna be different for everyone and there’s no point doing something you’re uncomfortable with. It has to be your decision.

For what it’s worth, my experience of GnRH analogues was fine. I was on Gonapeptyl injections for three months. I took Tibolone HRT at the same time. I felt different in myself (libido disappeared, which felt strange but not bad as such) and I continued to have some bleeding, but generally things were fine and I had less pain. I didn’t experience low mood or weight gain. After I’d been on the Gonapeptyl for three months I had a hysterectomy, which helped even more. For myself, I decided that I was willing to try it for the chance at some relief of my symptoms, and I’m glad I did.

Wishing you all the best x

Hey, I’d give them a go! For some women they work amazingly and the side effects are handled well with HRT. If you do then I would ask for monthly injections rather than three monthly so that if you don’t get on with it, you only have a small time frame.

I’d also make sure you get HRT patches - they work a lot better in my experience than tablets and really help with the side effects. For me it wasn’t just hot flushes etc it was mood, anxiety, aching muscles etc too and these really worked well!

Hi CupcakeL

Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time at the moment. It can't be easy trying to run a business while living with endo and I'm sure many of our members will identify with the symptoms you mentions - you're definitely not alone!

We run some amazing support groups, so if you ever need anyone to talk to then our free helpline (0808 808 2227) is run most days by volunteers who have personal experience of endometriosis. The times it is open can be found here: endometriosis-uk.org/helpline.

You may also find our support groups useful as a place where you can discuss endometriosis and the issues you are facing with other sufferers. To find out if there's a group in your area just visit endometriosis-uk.org/find-a.... If there's not a face to face group in your area, we also have an online support group.

Take care x

I can totally relate!!! When my consultant suggested decapeptyl I was terrified. Read up about it and was really concerned about mental Heath and weight gain. Have had hormone problems since about 15 and felt this would send me over the edge. My gp convinced me to try it as the pain from endo was so bad. I’m 3 months in and it’s AMAZING!!! Same mood every day, no pain, no periods, no cycle. I’m SO happy. Finally have the energy to get it together to lose a bit of weight and exercise. Didn’t realise how much the endo was effecting my whole life. Only side effects for me are night sweats and I do sometimes get very tired. Haven’t had to take any HRT. Only problem for me is I have to stop taking in 3 months! Good luck with what ever you decide, xx

Hi, I found making changes to my diet really helped with my symptoms. I completely get how hard it can be to make big changes though when you are tired and feeling rubbish. Just doing what you can manage can still help though - even if that's just having some shop bought fresh soups to keep your veg intake up and having some smoothies. Good luck with finding a way forward.
