Amitriptyline

Has anyone been prescribed amitriptyline for pain relief and has it worked? Been upped now to 30mg for pain relief (they’re very keen to let me know it’s not as an anti depressant!) and it’s doing nothing at all.

I’ve been on it for years, it’s a pain blocker at low doses but an antidepressant at higher doses, it’s also contains antihistamines hence it makes you drowsy. I think it’s more for nerve related pain to be honest x

Thank you for the reply. It’s doing nothing at all for the pain, the dr asked me to finish the pack I’m on before he’ll look at something else. Which I agreed to. It’s just trial and error, I guess. Does it work for you? Or have you found anything that does?

I’m early days being diagnosed, but after consultation gyno thinks it’s likely endo, I also have multiple fibroids, the amit helps me sleep and calms down unrelated pains, I don’t understand why he would want you to take it for 28 days as you might get withdrawal from it, Epsom salt baths help and magnesium x

Hi. Yes I had it, two a good month to get used to it and not be falling asleep but it helped with maintenance pain, for flare ups I needed tramadol. Have you tried the endo diet ? Doesn’t work for everyone but helped me despite me being very sceptical about it 😀. Xx

Yes, but it took 6 weeks to work. It has to build up apparently, but all of a sudden pain stopped. It’s been very good for me. But everyone is different. I can’t take strong painkillers as they make me feel weird so this is what they tried and I have to say it has been very good.

Yes, and I found it quite effective but it made me too drowsy (that was 10mg). It treats nerve pain and there are lots of other meds that can be prescribed so don’t hesitate to go back to your doctor if it’s not working. Most of them are also antidepressants but there are gabapentin and pregabalin as well.

I prescribed it for something else but another doctor said it would be better to take pregablin, said it’s a more modern medication and not so drowsy. Maybe worth you looking into that too.

I found once it built up over a period of 8 weeks it helped but did not eliminate the sciatic pains in my legs and calmed the gastro intestinal cramps and diahorrea. Even with tramadol and naproxen I was still in excruciating pain at ovulation and period. Had hysterectomy and ovaries removed beginning if August and only needed amitriptyline now relatively pain free. Find a specialist excision surgeon

I take these for nerve pain following pinched nerve in spine leading to intolerable burning pain down leg. Started 30mg at night. Took a week or so to work but now only need 10mg per night. Definitely worked.
