Cycling and walking after hip surgery

Has anyone out there had a hip replacement? I have been told I have severe arthritis in my left hip having been suffering from hip pain for the past three years and advised by the consultant to have a full hip replacement. I am a keen cyclist, going out several times a week and a walker too having covered hundreds of miles over the past ten years taking part in long distance hikes. I'm a bit concerned about how a new hip will affect my activities.

I know several people who have had hip surgery and the results seem to be very mixed with some people returning to their past activities very quickly while some others suffering from constant pain and ending up fairly nearly near total disablement.
