I’m going in next week for my second lap! This one is to remove my two large cysts and also remove the remaining endometriosis on my womb and in my vagina. I will also be having rectal shaving/ resection depending on how deep the endometriosis is.
Can anyone advise how long the hospital stay was for you if you had to have your bowel shaved/resection?
I have read somewhere 4-7 days in hospital.
Thanks

I just had a look with the nhs and with resectioning it could be between 5-14 days in hospital but can be less. I went private and I had know that they had to do something with my bowel as the doctor said it was now “in the right place,” and I was there overnight (can’t imagine that was resectioning). I would think it would be an extreme case for you to be in 14 days from that information, I think depends on how well you progress after surgery. Hopefully someone can answer who knows a little bit more but that’s what I found.
I had the bowel shave, and was in overnight. I did sign for a bowel resection if required and would then be expected to stay in for 3 nights, I didn't need that as my endo hadn't perforated my bowel at that point in time.
The bowel shave is as it says; they take a bit off the outside of the bowel wall so it doesn't affect anything structurally inside. The bowel resection, depending on how much of it they remove; they can cut a small piece like a square or a larger piece out (like a ring or tube shaped) and stitch the remainder together. Obviously the bowel needs time to recover, a bag may be required for a day or two.
I hope that helps. It's one of those things; they really won't know until they actually visually see. But you should be able to ask at your pre-op, or call your specialists secretary. Your specialist should discuss all the options with you on the day too.
Hi Bethalex,I had surgery for the same as you have mentioned in October. I was kept in for 3 nights. It was extensive surgery, 6 hrs, appendix removed, 3 areas of bowel including rectum shaved, a large section of my vagina removed, and endo removed from other areas.
Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer.
