Does Hysterectomy resolve Endometriosis and Adenomyosis
Hysterectomy will solve adenomyosis, but it may not solve endometriosis, many have talked about still having pain of endo come back from as early six months after. Unless they are removing all endometriosis in the pelvis and ovaries, then it’s likely to come back
I had an oophorectomy 2 years ago, I am 49 and had misdiagnosis endometriosis for 20 years I also had cysts ovaries and uterus and fibroids resulting in stage 4 by the time of the operation. I still have some pain in my bowels occasionally and my GP has said that some endo remains in there but none anywhere else. I cannot take HRT for other medical reasons thus I have gone full menopause quickly. The operation has been a success for the pain but please do your research on the other side effects, the quick loss of hormones has a tremendous impact on the body and mind which can really take there toll - I am not sure if HRT helps with this or if you keep your ovaries it is different or even age however I have read studies that say it can return due to oestrogen levels . Before diagnosis I had an ablation which helped with heavy periods. Yes I would definitely have the operation again for the pain, exhaustion etc. but I wish there had been more advice on the side affects so I could have prepared.
I had both and had a hysterectomy and both ovaries out and yes it cured adeno. But as done by general gynae he didn’t remove endo believing it would die off as my ovaries were taken but it doesn’t and kept growing. I didn’t have any time without pain. In fact my pain got so much worse after hyster and I had 3 more ops last one to remove deep infiltrating endo in vaginal vault at BSGE centre. So don’t just go for hyster without research and checking your surgeon out thoroughly. I have been on HRT since and it’s helped but took a while to get right one. You must be on a combined hrt as endo sufferer. I’m on femostan conti now and it helps my mood and aches and pains and keeps hot flushes under control.
It’s the reason I didn’t go for a hysterectomy, I didn’t want to go through that op for such a slim chance of it taking away the pain.
I have managed with many hefty pain meds, change of some food which I found to cause acute bouts of pain, and also exercise has helped me cope with symptoms, as ironic as it sounds.
I have endo since starting my periods at ten years old, and eventually diagnosed at 40 with stage 4 endo and suspected adeno as I was told they can’t confirm until uterus removed.
Hi. In my case a hysterectomy would not solve endometriosis because the endo was out of the uterus. Its climbed to ureter, bladder, bowels and sideway. A hysterectomy comes with its own problems too. It solves adeno though, as does the menopause. Menopause does not automatically solve endo either, it slows it down. It depends where your endo is located. I manage my symptoms with an exclusion anti inflammatory diet, its not perfect but it has really helped me control and reduce the pain, I received no support from GPs, nor from the consultant who did my first lap.
I had a hysterectomy four years ago and had both. Endo and adeno. The hyster left me without any pain for 3 1/2 years as the Endo was also cut out where possible. I kept my ovaries (I was 41) so unfortunately Endo was bound to come back and it has. I am nowhere near in the pain that I was so I would do it again as I found life unbearable before. Hope this helps.
thank you for your advice... i had ambulance out on Saturday pain so bad. Horrible ordeal. But on Injection and HRT which are doing noting for the Adenomyosis. My joints are agoney will have to fit a stairlift soon.
I totally understand. I was suicidal before my hyster as just couldn’t imagine ever being happy when I was in so much pain. The pain now is just pain nowhere near those levels and perhaps 2 days a month not everyday. Everyone is different but definitely worth exploring and try to get an Endo specialist if you can.
Hi there, my story is much more positive after my total hyster with ovary removal. I was regularly blue lighted with my endo flare ups for around 8 years after having my children. Then I was diagnosed after lap - adhesions/extensive endo/ovaries stuck to uterus/tubes to bowel etc and had hyst op in 2011. I have been endo free since then Obvs the road to recovery from a hyster isn't a quick road to travel but IMO it was well worth the hurdles. Good luck with your decision as the results aren't the same for everyone but I felt I had no choice but to take the gamble after the success of my Prostrap.
