Anyone who's taken gabapentin, how long did the side effects take to improve?

Have just been given a trial of this to hopefully help with my pain. Took it for two days and had awful drowsiness and memory loss. Stopped taking it for a couple of days and have just started it again with the intention of sticking with it for a few weeks in the hope the side effects will get better. Anybody that's taken this, can they give me an idea of how long it took for them to get used to it? I'm only on a tiny dose (breastfeeding and have small children to look after), but it does seem to help with the pain. Can anyone give me some hope?
