Has anyone had a mirena coil fitted for the treatment of endometriosis and it not work? Or caused more heavy bleeding than before?

Hi, I had a Mirena coil fail. I wasn’t being treated for endometriosis at the time, just using it as birth control. I now have a 8 year old (I wouldn’t change a thing). I did bleed throughout my pregnancy with him though, I thought it was my period. I didn’t know I was pregnant until 32 weeks.

Yes I have a two mirena coils fitted over the years and the bleeding and pain was worse than ever the doctors say u need to give it time to settle but in my case I had very heavy bleeding for the 5 years I had it in and the second one I had only lasted keeping it in for a week cause the pain was horrendous.i found the more people’s stories with the coil it seams to make it worse not better

Thanks for reply, I am on my 2nd coil really heavy bleeding with large clots. I keep being told it needs to settle and could be up to 6 months like it. Making it very difficult for me to go to work. I hope you are much better now x

Hi, I have had the Mirena coil fitted since July 2018 and although it has gradually stopped my period (I have the odd breakthrough bleed) it hasn't helped me much at all. I had it fitted during my first lap when they found and removed endo from my ueterosacral ligament. My first two periods were awful but that appears to be consequence of the lap and the irritation caused from having the coil fitted. My pain, however, is gradually getting worse, and when I went back to the consultent (a new one as I had moved to a new area) they were stumped as I am on the 'treatment' for endo - although I know from reading the experieces of others with endo that it does not always work. So although I don't have a period I still get a lot of pain-more so from ovulation to when I shuld be on my period - with aches and sharp stabbing pain expereinced almost daily. I still have other symptoms such as bleeding and aching after sex but they don't seem concerned at all - I am one of the unfortnate ones. I was sent for an MRI to look for deep endo which came back clear and they said they might have to re-evaluate my disagnosis of endo - even though I had some endo removed etc. I am wating on the 'you most have IBS' most women with endo get fobbed off with.

Sorry it's not a positive story - I wish the coil worked but alas not for me. I'll keep the coil though as I don't want to deal with bleeding on top of the pain and the worry of getting pregnant etc. I also don't know how much worse I'd be if I didn't have it which scares me enough to stick with it. Fingers crossed the bleeding slows down - mine did on a monthly basis.

Currently awaiting a referral to investigate endo. I had the coil as both a contraceptive and "treatment" for heavy periods based on having pcos, it was one of the worst decisions of my life I had it for a year and a half i was in daily pain, mood swings, insomnia just felt like I had a piece of barbed wire up there periods where as heavy as ever and the day I came out was such a relief. I've been on the combined and mini pill as well they just made me depressed and had no affect on my periods they just made me bleed more. I've now had a womb lining obilation as I don't intend to have more children and attempting to try metformin again whilst I wait. I hope this helps and I hope that it either settles for you or you can find an alternative that does help 😊x

Thank you for reply. Unfortunately I have had to have it removed as it was starting to dispel itself x

My experience was not good. Mine gave me cramps for the 6 weeks. By the time I had my 6 week check it was almost out. Was horrible having it removed was a disaster. Now I am been told I need to try it again. Sorry you have had a bad experience. Hope you get sorted. Take care. X

Hardly bled at all on the coil but the pain was almost as bad and that's what I wanted it to treat so no good for me

I'm almost bleeding/spotting daily on the coil. Where it would stop for only a day or two. Not sure if it's due to the coil or my Endo but I've been experiencing more pain, more frequently lately. My specialist did say the endometrioma on my ovary is getting larger so it may be due to that as well

My sister also has endo and the coil has worked wonders for her. Stopped both pain & bleeding. Unfortunately for me my body has now dispelled the coil so looking at other options. Hope things settle for you soon x

I had the coil in and it gave me such pain! I had pain after sex and it kept going on forever! It stopped my periods but never the pain. It was very uncomfortable during intercourse as well. My best decision was to take it out in the end as I couldn’t cope with the pain! I found it didn’t work for me at all at the age of 20. I got it fitted after my operation as they recommended it the best treatment but in my opinion it’s not. I hope this helps!xx
