Hi, I'm a 22 year old female and this week I got diagnosed with endometriosis. I have been back and forward between my GP and consultants for two years to rule everything out before my GP would refer me to a OB/GYN. I had a bunch of tests done and finally had my appointment with the Gyno on Thursday and he's told me he's pretty certain I have endometriosis. I'm yet to go for an MRI to confirm but he wants be to start treatment on Decapeptyl to start menopause to basically hit a reset button on my reproductive system. Has anyone had this treatment before? I wasn't given a whole lot of information from the consultant but he told me to look online but there isn't that much information out there and I'm feeling stressed about starting this. I'm also scared because menopause at 22 isn't exactly the norm. Can anyone discuss their experience with this treatment and if it has helped them at all with their pain? Thank you in advance
Decapeptyl treatment: Hi, I'm a 22 year old... - Endometriosis UK
Decapeptyl treatment
You’re too young for menopause. There are severe long term health consequences of taking these hormones. Excision surgery can help with the pain and preserve your fertility. Go onto Facebook and join the group ‘Nancy’s Nook Endometriosis Education Group’ and find the list of excision and endo specialists in your area. Endo is a very complex disease and you need to see a specialist. Do not let a non specialist give you advice and ESPECIALLY do not let a non specialist do a laparoscopy on you.
Also you may in fact have adenomyosis. The first line of treatment for that is birth control and the Mirena coil. If that doesn’t work then you may end up having to have a hysterectomy.
Be very very careful who treats you. Regular gynaecologists mostly don’t have a clue.
Woahhh slow down doctor lol. There are a TON of treatments you should be trying before they put you in menopause. That is a last resort. I know your instinct is to listen to your doctor but please don't in this situation. They haven't even confirmed that you have endometriosis yet... they really should not even be considering this. Unfortunately, the only way to diagnose endo is through surgery; an MRI likely cannot do this. There are way more treatments that they should be trying before jumping to this. Please any questions you have, just ask me. I have tons of personal and formal experience.
Hi, thanks for replying. Basically after talking to the consultant we realised that I had been given the other treatment options from another previous thing. That’s why we have arrived at starting menopause, this has been a two year investigation with my GP so both her and the Gyno are keen to get me to a point where I ament in pain anymore. I trust both of them for what they have told me after a GP appointment today and while I’m still anxious because of my age I do feel like I’m on the right track. I just want to see if there’s anyone out there who has had the treatment and if it has been beneficial for them to try ease my mind a bit before I start treatment. Thanks!
I have had this treatment, but it was only after having multiple unsuccessful surgeries and trying all the other treatments. It had horrible side effects and they only put me on it because they found masses on my ovaries that were concerning for possible cancer. What other treatments have you tried?
I’m sorry to hear that you had horrible side effects, can I ask what they were (trying to prepare myself)? And if you found the treatment to have made a difference?
Just medication as previous treatment
Surgery is preferable over putting you in menopause.. early menopause causes bone and muscle wasting over time. For me I had bad hot flashes, migraines, vomiting/nausea, dizziness, muscle and join pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, depressed mood.. to name a few. It helped in that the growths and cysts didn't continue to enlarge but it did not help my pain at all. For me it was not a treatment, it was more to prevent further damage to my ovaries until I could get in for surgery. It is entirely your decision, but based on my own personal experiences and knowledge as a health care professional, I would never recommend this course of action unless you are in a situation like myself where there is a potential for cancer or extremely dangerous endometriomas. I would highly recommend a laproscopic excision surgery from a trained endometriosis specialist. I tried two surgeries, two different types of continuous birth control, Visanne, and more medications, before this was even considered an option. And it was only a short term option before they could do something else (I got two injections for a total of 2 months on this medication and my doctor said 3 months was the max he would ever put me on). It is extremely unhealthy and more reports are coming out now about the negative implications. Again, entirely your decision but I just want to ensure you are informed.
hey not sure if you’ll see this, I’m 22 and in my 4th month of decapeptyl. I was just wondering what to expect after I finish as I have 2 weeks after it wears off before I see a gynaecologist. I can’t go back to see the Dr who gave it to me as my medical insurance won’t cover me anymore and I don’t have a doctor. Any help or advice you have would be amazing
