Should I tell my new employer I have endo?

I got made redundant and just started a new job and I'm not sure if I should tell my manager I have endo?

I did have to fill out a health questionnaire for HR and I wrote it on there but I'm not sure if I need to make my manager aware or if it's not necessary.

I do still suffer with all the symptoms and some months are worse than others and can last pretty much the whole month.

I feel like im pretty good at pretending I'm ok and can try fake a smile. Has anyone else had experience with this? Good or bad?

I personally find employers unsupportive, even female managers who I think should show more compassion and understanding actually don’t. I would say if you have time off sick due to Endometriosis then speak to your new employer about it but until then I wouldn’t x

I think you should. As there are days you will call in sick, endometriosis is a chronic illness so your GP with for sure write that on sick notes.

My employer knows, since I’ve had 4 operations during the time working there. They also would need to know, because at the drop of a hat, I would need to go home due to severe pain. I can be fine in the morning and by afternoon I can hardly walk.

I have no issue letting people know of this. I refuse to suffer in silence, it is an illness.

Hi you are not abliged to tell your manager, If u are off sick because if it then just get a sick note and if your sickness is high because of it then you may want to discuss with your manager a plan, maybe working from home on bad days. I have just started a new job and I haven’t told my manager as to me it’s personal and shouldn’t affect whether I get a job or not x

Personally I wouldn't and haven't. I had a colleague who told her line manager and a few others that she had stage 4 Endo (as she'd had a lap). Being mainly all women you would think she got some empathy, understanding and compassion etc, but it was quite the opposite. Every month they would joke whether she would be off with "period pains" and make a joke about it. They finally used it as an excuse to get rid of her and ask her to leave/ force her out. She did take 2-3 days off nearly every other month from what I recall. Better just phone in ill/ sick and tell them nothing. Unless a woman has it themselves they don't always 'get it' if that makes sense. Best wishes x

Hi, I've been lucky and had a very postive experience with my Manager (male). The past couple of years with my chronic pains my Manager has been very supportive and is happy to accomodate my needs and now even more so since i finally got a diagnosis of stage 4 endo last month.

Tbh although in daily pain I prefer to just keep my head down and keep busy as it helps to distract me and on really bad days i will work from home or make up the hours on another day. It is frustrating though as i know I dont quite work at the 100% i use to ( i feel im only about 75% of my old working self but feel very lucky I can still work after reading other womens stories).

Trust your instincts and see how your relationship builds with your Manager, like others have said there is no need to tell your Manager but if you did feel slight amendments to your working day could really benefit you do not be afraid to discuss with HR (for me it was a change of working hours, working from home once a week, a standing desk as i get bad shooting pains in my buttocks & back ache). I went with the "if you dont ask you dont get" attitude, I know not every one is as fortunate to have supporting management which is actually really sad to hear. Good luck in the new job! x
