Reason for MRI post op?

Hi all, I recently had my first laparoscopy. It was suggested I didn’t have endometriosis beforehand and nothing showed up on scans/blood tests but moderate endometriosis was found and removed.

My question is that they also found a cyst but said they needed to give me an MRI first before any further action is taken. I was out of it when they told me this and haven’t been able to get a call back from my doctor. Do any of you know why I’ll need an MRI, is it because it could be cancer, to find out where it’s attached, any other reasons? I’m really not sure and the cancer question is looming over me! I have up to 4-5 weeks to wait for an MRI appointment.

Hey I’ve had an operation to remove all endo but my symptoms haven’t gone away so I’ve been sent for an MRI and further surgery, it’s to check that there’s nothing else there that he couldn’t see or feel during the first surgery he did for example deep endo nodules. I’m not sure why they’ve given you one this is just my experience but I would say if they’re giving you a scan in 4-5 weeks it doesn’t seem like they believe it’s cancer. Usually if they think it’s anything like that they’ll can you within a week or two. Hopefully this will put your mind at rest xx

Hi Lottie,

Post MRI isn’t necessarily anything to be worried about. As they found a cyst it could be to monitor it incase it’s an Endometrioma which doesn’t go away on its own and has to normally be surgically removed. Therefore if they do an MRI that might help them with going forward, wether or not it needs removing due to size etc...

There are many types of cysts, did they say what type of cyst or where is was? It’s easier said than done but try not to over worry yourself that it is cancer related.

I hope you’re recovering well from your Lap.

I don’t think they said what type of cyst it was and I’m not sure they knew. It seemed the idea of the MRI was to get a better look at the cyst. I remember asking if they knew what the cyst was and she said she didn’t know and that’s what the MRI was for, which is why I feel nervous. But I agree that it is unlikely suspected cancer if they’re making me wait a month for a scan. Thank you both for putting my mind at ease!

I’m sure if it was a concern during you lap they would have pushed for an urgent MRI and different tests and not have you wait a few weeks.

You’re bound to feel nervous, I recently had my second lap and prior to it they found a 9cm cyst and was just as nervous but knew them leaving be waiting so long led me to believe it was nothing to worry about, which it wasn’t.

If you’re feeling anxious in the next coming weeks leading up to your appointment you could perhaps contacts your consultants reception for more information?

Hopefully you’re pain free from recovering too.
