Confused and don't know what to do... Coil or no Coil?

Hi Everyone,

I have my consultant appointment next Wednesday and I am starting to get very nervous. My periods are so heavy that they want me to have the coil fitted, and apparently as part of my appointment on Wednesday they might do this. Now I am really not sure if I want to go ahead with this or not, I want to talk to the consultant about it and what would be the benefits vs the negatives, but I am scared that I have to make a decision there and then.

What are everyone else's opinion on the coil?

My main issue is that I wouldn't require it for contraception and I am not able to get pregnant naturally anyway, so it feels wrong putting something inside my body that isn't needed. I would rather not have to have anything like that, but at the same time my periods and ovulation are so painful that I guess if it would help that I should do it... The other issue is that they think due to the Endo my uterus has been pulled massively out of shape, and pulled to the side, they tried to get the coil in at the doctors and were massively unsuccessful, so I will have to have numbing injections and everything to get it fitted... just sounds horrible :-(

I am completely confused and really don't know what to do.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated right now.

thanks!

Emma

Hey. The coil is a very individual thing. It polarises people as it tends to either work great or have side effects that means it has to come out. If you go for it it needs 4 or 5 months to settle so be prepared to give it a fair run. My experience:

I bled non stop for 6 weeks tue heaviest ever. Then my periods stopped like a tap overnight.

It was really really nice not having periods.

The cons for me was that it gave me a niggly pelvic pain not bad but enough to be a bit wearing. So the out of shape uterus is something to think about and discuss. You can always change your mind right up until the procedure. Id had ovary surgery which might be why i found it uncomfortable.

It may also have caused me low mood but they were zoladexing me at the same time so hard to be sure.

I decided the niggly pain vs no period trade off didnt work for me so removed it month 5. Shame as its the closest thing to helping me that i found.

You have the right to have it out anytime so its reasonably low risk to try if you decided to.

Good luck in whatever you decide is right for you.

I’ve had the more a coil fitted as I was bleeding for 4 weeks+ it took six months for this to settle down but other than very very occasional light spotting I’ve not had a period since. Ive now had it for two years. Unfortunately I do still have episodes of flare up which can be extremely painful. I can definitely say from a period side of things it’s the best thing I’ve had to help this.

Agree with this, I've had the Mirena for nearly 5 years. Horrific start with it and got some side affects which are still here now, but it did settle down. Still had pain and other issues, my periods have always stuck around (so envious of those of you that didn't) effective none the less. It's now at the end of its lifespan and I'm getting pregnancy symptoms, short cycles and awful mood swings. It is very much an individual option but do persevere with it to start with.

Hi I have found it a positive thing in regard to bleeding, I don’t have bleeds now (or for the last 4-5 months) and I’ve had it for two years. Had a good 7 months without pain, I do have other things going on in my pelvis and do get pain between ovulation and when my period should be due but think I’d be suffering more without the coil.

It’s totally your choice even if they seem to be pushing you to get it. Get all the info you can to make an informed decision

Best of luck x
