Hello! I got my Mirena fitted end of December and have been on and off bleeding for the whole time! I’ve been bleeding now for 2 weeks straight! Just wondering if anyone else has had these problems and if so when does it all calm down? It hurts a lot when I’m on my period because of my endo so it’s really draining me!! Thanks for in advance xxx

Hi :)

How heavy is the bleeding? I’ve had the coil for 3.5 years now and it took around 11 months to settle and in that time I was bleeding/ spotting on and off for the whole time but not very heavily. In fact it was still a massive improvement as I used to have 3 week periods and 1 of those weeks I wouldn’t be able to leave the house as it was so heavy. When I first had the coil put in they did warn me it usually took around a year to settle xxx

It varies one day it will only be abit and the next will be like a full blown period it’s really weird! When it’s heavy I can’t move or leave the house because I’m in so much pain! And thank you!! Xxx

Blimey that does sound a lot worse than I had it. Could you book in to see your consultant/ GP to check if it’s not been expelled and it’s all okay? Xx

Hi, I chose to have the mirena coil as a 'treatment' for endometriosis before I had the Lap as I am on a very intense university degree and can't afford to take any time off for surgery. The first 6 months of the coil was absolutely horrendous, I bled every day, sometimes really heavy bleeds, other days light spotting, the cramps got worse, to a point where I was prescribed some anti spasmodic medication to stop my uterus contracting so badly, one day I woke up and it all finished as quickly as it had come on. I couldn't believe it, now I don't bleed at all, I still get the odd day where I have bad uterine cramps, but pain relief really takes the edge off them, and they are no where near as bad as they had been before having the coil. The coil works differently for some women, and it got so bad to begin with I wanted to have it removed, however i would really recommend sticking it out and giving it a chance to settle before having it removed. As I've said, its variable from woman to woman, mine took 6 months to settle, my best friend had hers in for 2 months and then it settled. You should be due a follow up appt 6 months after having it in, if you are still experiencing problems then, I would speak to your GP and discuss alternative options for you. Hope it gets better for you soon x
