Going on holiday after lap?

SufferingSilently9 profile image

Hi all,

I have my Lap at the end of March to diagnose Endo and hopefully remove some or figure out why I'm in so much pain.

However, I'm going on holiday 24 days after my surgery and am starting to worry about stitches etc healing by the time I go on holiday or if the air pressure will affect it at all??

Anyone else gone away within a month of their surgery? Do you think it'll be an issue?

Thanks xx

I’m also going on holiday a month after my lap. You’re allowed to fly at that point, but I’m going long haul so I’m considering wearing those horrible stockings 🙈.

I had a lap last year and I’m sure my stitches took over a month to dissolve so I’m just being extra careful about what I take with me - shorts are all having to be stretchy so the waistband isn’t sitting right against any wounds x

Whether you can fly depends on personal risk factors largely duration of surgery, extent of treatment and smoking and family history etc as well as duration of the flight so you need to medical advice individual to your situation. Also bear in mind what medication you will need and what country you will be flying to. Opiates are banned in some countries for example.

I flew short haul 3 weeks after a diagnostic lap. I did suffer some pain from the altitude while flying and from suitcase shifting, it settled after a couple of days.

Have to say, nice though the sun was, I had an utterly miserable time on holiday as I was still in a lot of pain, exhausted (internal healing causes fatigue) and unable to do any activities. Personally, with hindsight i wished i had postponed it. When I feel rough all I want to do is be at home and curl up in bed.

But we all react differently to surgery and some ladies bounce back in a couple of weeks.

Worth knowing that the first 3 periods post op are often more painful than usual as it takes around 3 months to heal internally, this is a good guide to what goes on as the body recovers post op. I wish I'd known it before to plan better so hope it helps. centerforendo.com/is-my-end...

Thanks for the advice :)

Guess I'll have to ask the doctor after the surgery because it's a 9 hour flight to USA.

So glad I read this! Was planning on flying to Hong Kong and Thailand so around 15 hours each way a month after my surgery and assumed it would be totally fine and the altitude wouldn’t make a difference. Maybe my op being cancelled due to weather is a blessing in disguise x

I have been on hols about 2 weeks after surgery. You may need to take it easier than normal but a change of scene should really aid recovery (and my surgeon said a little sunshine on lap scars helps with healing).

Yes I went away on a flight 2 mths after. I wasn't well on the flight but glad I went. It was like a new start which lifted me for several months. Wear your heart on your sleeve and take it as it comes. Think positive it will seen you through. x

Hey

I had my lap last july and went to italy 31/2 weeks later. I still had my stitches in and was still very sore and achey but my partner carried my bags and wheeled my suitcase then i just sat or laid in the airport till i got on plane.

Yes it was a inconvenience ( the traveling) BUT once i got there i literally laid on my back and did not move for 7 days and i got to say it actually did me some good coz when i was at home i was still having to do things ie housework, cook, look after my dogs.

My stitches actually came out on beach from bellybutton on my 4th day there , think it was where i was in and out of sea it healed my wounds.

Go and enjoy. Once u get through the traveling ur b there and u can lay and relax!

Unfortunately it's not a relaxing holiday as it's Florida so doing theme parks which I adore! I'm so scared now that I'm not gonna be healed or I'm gonna be in pain whilst trying to enjoy myself.

I dont know if id have been able to cope with that but i prob would have made myself as it is florida and you have to!

Just take pills with you for pain and sleep well , do what u can and then rest for while, i just found i had no energy, i wasnt in pain just discomfort.
