Painkillers giving me suicidal thoughts but doctor says nothing else they can do?

I just need a rant really. Been 4 months since my pre op and still waiting for my operation.

Now this is a bit personal but I really need to share/rant. I was prescribed 6-8 tramadol a day which did not affect my pain but instead made me go a bit crazy with scary thoughts and dreams: Suicidal, hurting myself etc.

So I obviously stopped taking them because there is no point in ruining my mental health with no benefit to my physical.

Told the doctor about this and she prescribed me anti depressants and told me there was nothing else she could do about the pain except prescribe the painkillers again.

I phoned out of hours doctors tonight cause the pain has left me immobile and unable to eat for the last 2 days. Again, nothing they can do and that I should really take painkillers because the more I take them the better they should work. Is that even true?

Surely this isn't right? Are they just trying to fob me off and get me to leave them alone until my op? I just don't know what to do, anyone else had bad experience with Tramadol.

I know this is a bit much and I'm so sorry but I have no idea who else to turn to really. Frustrated.

I have this same reaction with tramadol!!! I thought I was the only one!

I have to have something like Percocet or oxycodone. I would NOT keep taking it and hope it gets better that sounds horrible especially with how it makes me feel! And prescribing an antidepressant for something caused by another medication? I’m sorry but that is just stupid to me. I hate doctors sometimes...

Is there any way you can get a different pain pill? It sounds like they’re trying to fob you off to me but I’m unsure since I am not in your situation but from what you described that just seems unacceptable. There must be something else they can prescribe.

And don’t apologize!! It’s what we are here for! Feel free to message me because I know exactly how it feels to have tramadol make you feel horrible mentally xx
