See your GP - get antibiotics if it is a bacterial infection. if it is viral then you have to ride it out.

If it is just a throat infection and doesn't spread to be a lung infection/cough then your op would still probably go ahead, but if you do develop a chesty cough then it would usually get postponed because of the difficulties this can cause to the anaesthetist.

I would see your GP and inform the hosp asap. If you need to postpone - the more notice you can give, the better the chance that they may give the theatre time to someone else and you can then standby for someone else being taken ill and having to postpone when you are well enough to go ahead with the op.

It happens all the time for one reason or another and what disrupts you benefits someone else in the queue and likewise what disrupts someone else can be of benefit to you too.

It's too soon to say for sure that you would need to postpone, but it wouldn't hurt to see the GP and get antibiotics just incase this is a bacterial bug infection.

Antiseptic throat sweets like strepsils etc can help if it is a bacterial bug.

I had tonsilitus the week before my lap last year and a horrible cough too. My stupid GP said it was a virus so i had to ride it out but i know it was tonsilitus as have had it many times, i was really panicking but just made sure i did everything i could to get better. Hot water with honey and lemon really helped. Luckily i felt alot better on day of op although still had annoying cough. When they asked if i had been ill recently as part of there questions i just said no i hadn't as didn't want to risk surgery being cancelled. Just look after yourself, get checked ou by GP try the honey and lemon and don't mention it at the hospital. lol.xx

I ended up going to a walk in centre just before and got seen by a gp. I've tonsilitis and been given antibiotics for 7 days. He said I should inform the hospital about this. But it shouldn't stop me havin the op. What should I do? My Hosp have stated in the letter if I'm 2 weeks before I need to let them knw. I want my lap to go head. X

Yes i would definitely inform the hosp. they won't cancel the op but will probably assess you before the op to make sure your breathing is fine. the antibiotics should sort you out in the meantime in any case. Tonsilitis is bacterial it is unlikely to cause any lung problems at all, but you should still keep the surgical team updated despite cheeky Cat247's decision not to tell them in her case LOL.

I think it only fair to yourself that you do keep them up to date with what is going on, plus they need to know what antibiotics you have been on and are still inside you at the time of the op, it could have a bearing on any other drugs you may need after the op too.

I hope you feel better soon. I'm sure you will be ok for your surgery.

When I have a bad throat, I gargle with soluble paracetamol. They taste absolutely vile, but really help.

Take care,
