Hi I'm new to all this but after years of... - Endometriosis UK
Hi I'm new to all this but after years of heavy painful periods my gp has recommended to have the coil fitted , any advice please x

Hello.... Welcome.
Quite a few if us have the coil (the mirena). Some ladies love the mirena while others can't get it out soon enough!
The mirena can be inserted anytime but some ladies say it's easier to have inserted during a laparoscopy.
It can take between 3-6 months to start working properly. During this time a lot of ladies have bleeding and spotting almost continuously. And also experience pain.
Personally I am on my 3rd attempt at the mirena. My first one fell out with an extremely heavy period. The second one was removed after 15 months due to pelvic pain. I had my 3rd put in at the end of January this year. It's already made my two scheduled periods extremely light. I haven't suffered too badly with spotting. Unfortunately it has not helped my pelvic pain yet.

Best wishes,

Thanks Barbara
I was all set to agree to having it but after reading a lot online I'm now not so sure, my periods last about 5 days at the moment but are so heavy and painful. I had a ovary removed 6 months ago and a lot of scare tissue from endo things settled but are now back with a vengeance.
Unfortunately the only stories on line are the bad ones !
The mirena is great for some ladies and in my opinion it's definitely worth trying.
It can be taken out at anytime if you really don't like it. X
Absoutely worth trying and putting up with the settling in period of a few months till it starts to work - then up to 5 years period free- it is brilliant. Best of all the things I have tried by a long way.
Thanks I'm a bit scared after reading all the negative stuff but willing to try anything as for one week a month I have no life at all x
