First Gynae appt next week. Very unsure of what will happen....

Hi Ladies,

Ive finally got my first Gynae appointment next week after being referred by my GP. Im very unsure of what to think, as my periods have become ridiculously irregular. I seem to have skipped one, which isn't major for me as they usually do this, but I'm worried that it may decide to appear when I'm going to be going to my appointment. Will my gynae still see me if i am on my period? Its taken long enough for this appointment so i really dont want to have to wait.

Also I'm very worried about whats going to happen in this first appointment.

Could anyone give me an idea of what happened in theirs if possible?

Hi there Emma-Louise - don't worry, you'll be fine! Has your GP said that they think it's endo or are they just referring you for general investigation? Have you had any scans done?

Best thing to do is go prepared and write down all your symptoms, as the gynae will likely start from the very beginning and ask you to go through everything (despite them having your records and the fact that you being referred from the GP).

Try and note down cycle lengths, pain, any other symptoms you can think of and where they occur in your cycle, etc, as that will also be helpful. I would definitely still go even if you get your period as you may not have to be examined - I was at my gynae appt but other ladies on here have said they weren't.

I'm not sure what your consultant will recommend as when I had my appointment they could see from my scan results that I had cysts on my ovaries and probably endo on one of my ovaries, so it was quite straightforward and I was booked straight in for a lap. If you haven't had scans yet they may order one for you so they can see how everything is looking.

I was also given a couple of prescriptions to help with my really heavy periods, and sent off to wait to get my laparocopy date through.

I hope this helps! It sounds like you've got a good GP if they've referred you without much fuss, so I'm sure your consultant will be good too.

Thanks for the reply. Ive been to my gp several times and finally saw a different doctor, and she asked if i had any idea what could be causing it, i explained that my mum thought i could have Endo, and she agreed saying that was her first thought and that she would refer me. Ive been keeping a diary of everything since June but hadn't thought of doing one since then so I'm hoping thats enough to show them for the meanwhile. I haven't had any scans either, only the doctor feeling my tummy area but she said she wasn't expecting to be able to feel much. I just hope they can give me an answer.

They will probably give you an ultrasound either external or internal. This will show up if you have a cyst or anything obvious.

You may need a lap as endo is hard to see.

Changing diet may help with pain and may improve your immunity and general health. It may help to prevent endo getting worse but this is not for sure.

They gave me an ultrasound at my first appointment, but they injected me with dye first and this enabled them to see more clearly what was wrong. It showed up where the endo was and the extent of it too. This was very helpful as they knew exactly where to go when they operated to remove the endo. Hope you get sorted quickly.

I see the gyno for first time in couple of weeks i have had a scan to rule out any cysts,i have had to wait 2 months and at the moment am off work, but i get very breathless,i am feeling a bit scared as i dont know what to expect
