Hi guys hope you day has n't been too bad. I saw a specialist surgeon a couple of weeks ago who is going to excise my endo and has suggested that I have the mirena coil fitted at the same time. I said yes at the time as I was just so glad he had agreed to operate but since the I have been having some doubts. I haven't yet heard someone have a positive experience with the mirena and I have never been that good with other contaceptives they tend to make me a bit psychotic and mess with my cycle.
Anyone got any positive experiences or got any alternative suggestion?? I am starting to get myself in a bit of a pickle about it!

I don't think I could get through my life without it. It controls my extreme moods it definitely slows down the increasing pain since the last operation and to be honest I feel better when I have the coil fitted. It is uncomfortable to start but after a few weeks you forget it is in. I also thinkIt is easy to remove so if it doesn't work for you then you can just have it removed. I agree the coil does not get great press on this site but I have nothing but positive comments about the coil and having had seven ops for endo this definitely slows down the frequency for the laps and just makes life bearable.
Absolutely you should have it. Getting it put in is the toughest aspect , so any offer to have it installed while you are knocked out is something to jump at.
It does take time to settle and start to work. 4-5 months, but once yo have put up with that and it has stopped your periods it is without a shadow of a doubt the very best medical thing I have ever had. I swear by it.
I know not every woman will get through the initial few months, but if you can stick it out and it does what it is supposed to do, your life will be transformed.
No more worring about when you'll come on, how long you'll be on, having spare clothes available in case of accidents, no costs of pain killers and tampons etc.
It really can give you your life back. If you are troubled by heavy periods that takes up at least 1/4 of every month, of every year !! plus the loss of earnings and the expense of having periods.
Stopping your periods gives you so much time to do things as and when you want without worrying about periods. It saves money, you can book to do social events and activities that you didn't dare to arrange before because you didn't know if your period was expected and how painful and floody it would be.
It is worth trying. even if it turns out it doesn't suit you, getting it removed is the easier aspect, and can usually be done at any clinic.
If the strings are lost up inside your uterus which can happen, then it would mean a hospital visit to get it taken out as they have the right equipment.
If it does work for you, you will wonder why on earth you didn't have it fitted years ago.
It does last up to 5 years... which sometimes means less than 5 years for some ladies, but on average it is 5 years of little light spotting or no periods.
It really could be a life saver,a life changer, so do not hesitate for a second.
And despite never having had children and having a retroverted womb, I had mine put in under local anaesthetic and went back for the same procedure again when the first coil came to the end of its five year life. My gynae doesn't think I'll need another one as I should be safely into the menopause by the time this one runs out, but should my hormones prevail I wouldn't hesitate.
The reason you don't hear good reports about it is that if people are happy, it doesn't occur to them to take to the internet. On the other hand, a bad experience is guaranteed to be everywhere. That being said, it's not for everybody, but as Impatient said if it doesn't suit you they can easily whip it out again Just remember that you need to give it a good 6 months to settle, although you'll probably have forgotten you've got it by then!
I was a bit weirded out by the idea in the beginning, but after a few months I'm really happy with it. My pain has almost completely gone away and I hardly have periods any more - just very light bleeding. It's been a real life-changer. So I think if it's been recommended to you, then give it a go.
During the first couple of months I thought that absolutely everything that happened to me must be a side effect of the coil (it probably wasn't) because of the bad stories I'd heard from other users. But my very sympathetic GP gave me a lot of reassurance, and I'm really glad that I stuck with it.

give it ago anything is worth a try. I too have always been bad with different pills etc. the coil hasn't been the greatest for me but you could be different, you can always ask to go on anti-depressants or have the thing taken out?
Give it a go you can always have it taken out. I've had it in since my first lap in 2011 and just had my 2nd in may 2013. Mirena hasn't stopped my periods - I still bleed and have pain but amount has reduced. Good luck! Xx
I had the exact same done 4yrs ago and it was good for me and eased endo pain tremendously, I had it out 19mths ago to ttc (try to concieve) my endo symtoms have been awful and endo had increased since having it out . I had a lap just over a month ago, if I wasn't ttc I would have it put back in. Hope this helps, I know its not for everyone as it didn't suit my sister or my friend but neither of them have endo either. Oh also it stopped my periods completely which was fine for me. Oh also just to add I have had 3 coils (only last one mirena ) in 11yrs. Good Luck xx
Ive had the mirena twice, the first one was just after surgery and it was fantastic, took about four months to settle down but after that i was like a new women, i had loads of energy no pain and just felt on top of the world. I had it removed to have a baby and feel pregnant thankfully quite quikly after having it removed but then i was silly and left it a year after having the baby to have it out back in again and this time the pain had come back. Unfortunately the second time i really didnt get along with it, it didnt help with my existing pain and sent my already very weak pelvic muscles into spasm for months so i finally had to have it removed. So my suggestion would be if you are going to have it do it straight after the surgery because i didnt find it helped with existing pain but i did find it helped to stop it coming back after having it removed. Same here!!! I had my last november and went on dianette afterwards which made me put on weight! I had the mirena coil put in back in May and everything is so much better! Weight dropped gradually, periods which previously ruined my life (not to mention PMT) has all but disappeared! Wohoo! The worst bit was having it put in and i can't lie, for me it was bad, so if you can get it put in at the same time, go for it girl!!! So far i haven't looked back! X
Omg the thoughts of the coil freak me out but after reading this I think I'll be asking my surgeon to stick one in if he ever gets round to doing my next lap. Only been waiting since May!!!
It is great to see all the positive experiences with mirena, for me it did not work well at all, my periods were still heavy and my body expelled the coil after three months - however I think I was just unlucky and for most people it is probably a very good option. Good luck!
If your body expelled the mirena after 3 months, then it had not had long enough to even start working. It takes longer than that to build up a coating of goop around the coil to (a) hold it in place and (b) stop or reduce your periods, in the meantime periods would be normally happening (with the full flow and pains that you would have had anyway.)
The coils can fall out (they are tiny things) and if they do, they should be replaced. Did you get a new one put back in?
