Just had a really nasty episode of red swollen toe joint and badly swollen foot so painful I couldnt walk for 3 days. Anyone got any ideas for treatments as non steroidals are no go with kidney disease.

Dealing with gout
Hi There, i feel your pain. I had gout which went undiagnosed for months. Had it in my knees and ankles, which as you well know, was agony. I was started on allopurinol and colchicine. This worked but I would still have flare ups that is until a dr friend of mine told me about a new drug called Adrenuric acid (febuxstat). I started this treatment 2 yrs ago and haven't had a flare yet. It has my uric acid levels well under the limit, its once a day and I have had no side effects at all.
NICE guidelines on Gout recommend allopurinol first line treatment, this may be all you need but if that doesn't work then Febuxstat would be a great option. Some people experience flare up whenever they start a treatment, this is the case with both Allopurinol and Febuxstat but stick with it and ease the flare by using the colchicine. These flares ups are transient so make sure you stay on the meds. Good luck, I had tried everything including cherry extract, changing my diet etc but it was febuxstat that finnallly worked for me!
PS you are right about the non steroidals, stay away from them and ease the pain with standard paracetemol or codine.
Thank you so much for this extremely useful information i have kept the info for my next appointment with the Gp. I am taking the cherry extract too and watching what i eat. But just needed to be prepared and your info is just the ticket.
Best Regards Christine
