Hello I am CKD stage 3b and Also plagued with IBS D which also isn’t helped with anxiety.

My Dr has given me mebeverine which didn’t help and a tablet for Anxiety which also hasn’t helped.

I have taken immodium which after only a couple of tablets totally stops any bowel movement for a few days which then causes a different set of problems , however I am now trying Buscopen my question , is this safe to take with CKD .

I must add my Dr has not prescribed this someone told me about this so I am trying it out .

Thank you Mrs P

As I'm sure you know, you shouldn't take a drug based on a layman referral. If you're intent on taking it/them, always seek medical guidance. There are always side effects as well as likely interactions with other meds. Liver and kidney problems are most common.

But the best advice I would give is seek a qualified, Nutritional Therapist instead who may be able to improve/resolve both/all your medical conditions without drugs and hence the above problems. Theres a likelihood that all conditions are connected.

sorry but have you read her post she saw her doctor. I have ckd 3b & IBS D I presume , now there no way my kidney disease was caused by my IBS as I have an autoimmune disease. To the poster sure buscopan is fine as long given by your doctor. I had it as I had abdo pain when in A&E. If you are concerned make an appointment to speak with your GP.

Update just seen she took the buscopan without drs input apologies my mistake.

No problem re update (note: you could edit your post after submission, I do frequently!).

Health conditions are often connected, hence why a holistic approach is better imo. The cause of IBS is unknown (though not normally autoimmune like IBD) and is often "diagnosed" by GPs when there are GI issues that they cant explain during their limited patient time. And it is possible that such issues may be linked to CKD (eg 1st 2 links below) and anxiety. Note that the gut condition is so important for health and is often considered by a good Nutritional Therapist in a holistic approach.

Glad you didnt suffer with buscopan but caution is advised with ckd (link 3 below).

I did edit my post after submission hense the apology. I have a systemic autoimmune condition that can effect the GI tract, there is no cure, I am at present trialing gluten to see if coeliac as have been gluten free for many years. We know nutrition is important but to say it can cure all ills is untrue, however much you believe it. I was given one buscopan by a registered doctor which I am sure you are not.

Thanks for the reply but I never said that:

1. Nutrition can cure all ills (and drugs cannot either). But optimal nutrition can support the body to help overcome disease which numerous scientific reports confirm.

2. I was a registered doctor.

All links supplied for help/support.

Hi MrsP70,

I also have IBS, so I know the combination is not easy; anxiety and the fright of all of this doesn't help.

At this point, I would see a GI Consultant regarding the IBS and the continuous movements before taking Imodium or ANY such medications as they may not be appropriate for you at this time.

Let the GI person assess you and run their own tests. They also may recommend a nutritionist who can make healthy and appetizing food suggestions which based on your renal labs, and IBS will help with both safely.

Contact the prescribing doctor and let him/ her know that the anti- anxiety medication prescribed to you is not settling the jittery feeling and ask if another which is specifically prescribed for anxiety can be given to you.

If you have any doubts about a drug prescribed to you, Google Drugs.com or type in the name of the medication and scroll to Drugs.com and look them up. Here they will outline purposes, possible side effects and mild, moderate and severe drug interactions.

This is one more bump in the road; you'll get it straightened out.

Please reach out again and let us know how you are feeling. You're among friends.

I am in the Uk we can hardly get to see a Dr and I haven’t even seen a kidney specialist apparently you don’t get to see one unless you are stage four .

The only advise I have been given was “ Cut down on salt” we aren’t even told the readings of our blood tests, however the IBS is virtually turning me into a hermit and I have tried different things out with diet etc . To no avail .

I am not even sure that changing my Dr will help in this country anymore.

Thank you for the reply.

Hi MrsP70,

I can understand your frustrations with all that you are dealing with. Just remember that you are not alone.

I've heard varied stories about the flaws and changes in the UK health system from friends of mine who live there.

At this point, if you are not getting the answers and care from your GP, as frustrating as it may be, don't hesitate to seek another; even if you do so through urgent care.

Hopefully they will be able to prescribe a better medication for your anxiety and also refer you to a gastro consultant for the IBS as well as better address the CKD or get you a referral to a nephrology consultant. If you don't try, you won't know.

Once you are settled in with another GP and Gastrointestinal Consultant, then consider a Nutritional Therapist to work with their findings as it may work for some alone and not others as everyone's bodies and conditions are different.

Below are a couple of links to read on renal diets to get you started in a better direction.

Please take care of yourself, stay positive and reach back.
