Hello, I am newly diagnosed with CKD and have been avidly looking up diet tips etc. My GFR is 58 ,sodium and potassium are OK - my question is: I'm trying to reduce my protein intake but do not know if I'm supposed to cut out all protein from my diet or just reduce it ? I'm waiting for a virtual appointment with the hospital but wanted to get started with the diet as soon as possible,
Many thanks ...look forward to your advice.

Many of us are on CKD diet based on bloodwork. I was diagnosed at level 3b and Doctor gave me a diet plan. I have certain maximum levels on sodium, phosphorus , potassium, and protein. List your questions for diet and perhaps ask Doctor for referral to a dietitian. Davita gives a class on Chronic Kidney Disease. They also have many recipes on their web site. Welcome to the forum where you will get support and information on CKD.
You are barely stage 3 and limiting your protein too much could be detrimental. It is wise to eat 3 to 4 ounces of good quality protein for at least two meals, and all 3 if possible. It is always best to see what the specialist will tell you.
I do not know your age.But if you have protein in your urine, then better to control protein.
If you are above 70 and do not have protein in your urine, then there is no need for very low protein diets. You should always include first class protein in your diet
Yes I am similar and new and find it very interesting reading everyone’s problems which makes me feel not alone. My GP does not seem to take much notice and I will have to write a letter now to get a response.
Hi. Limiting protein is important for the kidney. You really cannot get completely away from protein as it is in many foods, including veggies. The suggestion I just gave someone was to use a tracker. That way you will know how much of what minerals and vitamins you are getting in your diet. I use this one myfitnesspal.com/ and Davita had one, but it is gone now. You log your food in daily and then you will know how much you are consuming and what you are eating.
The type of protein is also important. Eating red meat is very hard on the kidneys because of the type of protein in it. Red meat in general is hard on the digestive system. Things like egg whites, which has very little protein are easy on the kidney. Chicken and fish are easy. Googel foods that are low in protein and build your diet around those.
Hello barneyfrances, protein is an essential food group and while you should reduce it with CKD, you should certainly not cut it out. The amount of protein that you need depends on your stage of CKD. For stage 3-5 CKD, the recommended daily amount is about 0.55 - 0.6 grams per kilo of ideal body weight. Reducing your dependence on animal protein is a good idea and I agree you should ask to see a dietitian for initial support. Good luck!
