CKD and coronavirus

Are those of us at stage three CKD at greater risk of dying if we contract the corona virus? In other words, is this an "underlying medical issue" at ups the chances of dying?

There is no way to predict that anyone will die from any disease. This coronavirus is really being over hyped and scaring people. Wash you hands, don't touch your face. It is as basic as that and it should be everyone's hygiene practice whether or not you have an underlying medical condition or not.

If you are worried, limit your exposure to people. Wear gloves and wash them frequently and carry sanitizer and use it a lot. I do that normally if I am out and about.

Anyone with a chronic illness is at higher risk of getting more severe symptoms of any flu virus. I am always mindful of being around sick people but I also am a nurse so this one has me a little more concerned than others. Just too much that we don't know yet. I have already not gone to one event due to the inability of me to stay at least 3 to 6 feet away from other people.

Hi retired prof, this is a good question. I wanted to pose a similar one - are we at a higher risk (i.e. symptoms may be worse and take longer to improve)? If we are, then it would make sense to be more cautious than a healthy, young person. I've searched the NHS 111 web site and the National Kidney Federation and there's nothing specific for kidney patients. The main warning is for people who have had a transplant and are taking immuno suppressants, as this obviously means your immune system won't help you to fight the illness. I am stage 3b so worried about what to do with social events coming up - do I take the risk or not? There's nothing there because I suppose no-one really knows. I'm also retired so at least have a lot less contact with people. The Radio 2 Doctor on Jeremy Vine on Monday 9th March at 1pm stated that the people with long-term lung, liver and kidney disease are at greater risk as well as the elderly, those with cardio vascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, but no where else can I see the reference to liver and kidney disease in relation to Covid-19. It's a mystery, I suppose we'll have to make a judgement and decide for ourselves if we can take the risk.

My understanding is that if you have high blood pressure this will make you more susceptible to corona virus. This could be just another catch phrase but it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Observe good sanitary habits is the next best thing to exclusion.

For those who must shake my hand, I cough into my hand immediately prior and watch the hands be withdrawn! Nasty but effective.

From the latest news yesterday, our questions have been answered, I also trawled the kidney sites recently to find any information. I have Ckd 3a and I am 61 year female. The rest of my health is good. I work on the Bank with the NHS for a school immunisation service. I have excused myself from work today due to this new information.

Reading your post I thought I would ask your opinion please. I work as a delivery driver to peoples homes. 20-30 a day. I still don’t understand if ckd3a means I should continue self distance ie. doorstep only. Or self isolation at home off work? Any thoughts please.
