High Urate Levels Symptoms?

Jack76 profile image
9 Replies

I've just turned 50, and been having a few symptoms of generally unwellness.

Pain in the back / Kidney area. GP thinks I may have pulled this, but I wasn't so sure.

Also intense Brain Fog, confusion, memory lapse now and again, with fatigue and tiredness.

It feels like my head is being squeezed and 'swimming about' with lack of concentration.

Had 3 Urine tests in all! and all came back fine.

Had a blood test, and all fine, except High Uric Acid Levels which could indicate Gout?

No joint pain as such, maybe a little in the left wrist only,

Could these symptoms be caused all by High Uric Acid Levels? and how do I get them down?

I have been drinking lots of water with lemon to flush it out, but just wanted to check.

I have been to my GP and some Nurse practitioners (GP away) and they didn't have the capacity to help, so I'm feeling a little frustrated !

I am surprised they dismissed that lab. High uric acid is very dangerous when out of control. Yes it causes gout. But an also create painful kidney stones.

To help, there is medication like allopurinol and bicarb solutions. All need prescriptions.

Things you can do is stop eating red meat, and if you do indulge, beer. Look up diet for gout and it will explain about foods with high purines, which elevates uric acid or urate and then eliminate them from your diet.

The fact you are having confusion and brain fog and the doctor dismissed it, after the lab is very concerning. It is a no brainer. Maybe you need a new doctor.

Thanks. So you think High uric acid will cause brain fog and its all linked?

Absolutely. One of the things they worry about with people with end stage renal is their loss of cognitive abilities. Here is a link to review, but there is a lot of information out there about it. Keep on top of your labs, especially urate level, CO2 levels and GFR. I would look for a cause if your diet is good.

Thanks @Bassetmommer. I'm glad its all linked, as I'm hoping it can be helped.

My Kidney Function on my Bloods is all fine though, but a diminishing pain now, in my right hand side/back. But like a "squirming" inside my head, and even in my face, behind my eyes which feels weird.

Also a little bit of dizziness (I did have a diagnosis of Vestibular neuronitis about 30 years ago, with some recurrence of 'vertigo' style symptoms on and off) & wondered if I had an ear infection after relaxing in a Hot Tub over a couple of weeks ago.

So how do I cure this and get my levels down to clear this up?

I was told to keep drinking water, even 'Lemon Water' that I've tried to get through around 2L a day, as an effective diuretic, as i need to pee this out?

Anything else I can do, to get back to normal?

The 'brain fog' is the worst, as I'm just tired and can't concentrate much at the moment which I want to get back to normal.

The side/back pain is diminishing if it helps...

Thanks for any help as the nurses/GP haven't been great and this is the furthest I've got with your help. :)

hi Jack76, high uric acid levels are as bad as high cholesterol. its called Hyperuricemia but may not cause gout . When mine was very high it was suggested it might be a normal thing for me, I come from a family with gout. I was treated for gout and since then the levels are only slightly high for a female. I check myself with a meter like used by diabetics. I felt very ill when the uric acids were really high . I avoid all the high purine foods from the gout diet, I was also asked to loose weight and removed one of the blood pressure tablets that can make a difference with long term use to uric acid levels. Some tablets can cause this also, especially the brain fog. You do need a doctor who works with you or sometimes a nurse knows some things about the drugs ,& your chemist. So best wishes to you and remember it can take time to find what works best for you.

Did it give you Brain Fog also, katieoxo60? and back/kidney pain? (I can't quite establish where its coming from) but the right side.

Having been told its possibly 'muscular' I have rubbed in Deep Heat cream which helps, whether its numbing the pain, or whether it is indeed muscular, but the 'Brain Fog' and confusion that suddenly set in, is the worst, as I can't hold a thought for very long, and feel fatigued and tired...?

As mentioned, I've had 3 x Urine tests in the last week and all fine. Would Uric Acid show in Urine? or even Kidney Function in Blood results?

hi again, yes I had brain fog I also had right sided back pain which when X rayed unearthed more problems, plus severe tiredness. Myself & GP thought it was possibly muscular but I have had bladder problems , plus Kidney infection way back . The uric acids still remain slightly high , you could even have what's called gouty arthritis. On arthritis Action web page there are some details about gout and diets. When you feel unwell try to get an emergency appointment with the GP so they can investigate further. The deep heat possibly is numbing the pain, like me I take constant pain killers including opioids for arthritic pain so can't be sure how bad the pain really is it's just masking the true problems.

oh Jack, do not take pain meds or opioids. First of all, ibuprofen, the favorite choice for an OTC pain med will KILL your kidneys. That is was did mine in. Prescribed ibuprofen. Secondly, before you take something to mask the pain, you need to be tested for inflammation markers, which are all blood tests. CRP and Sed rate are common ones. You MAY, please note the word may, have a autoimmune disease that is just getting going... MAYBE...but get tested to rule it out. There are very common side effects from Lupus and Psoriatic Arthritis that should be ruled out. Both of these will raise your uric acid level.

Again, the fact that your doctor is dismissing this is very concerning. Having that much brain fog at your age is not common and should be researched.

I haven't taken any tablet pain killers as such, and no Ibuprofen.

I do take daily vitamins for health, like Vitamin D3, Magnesium, and Omega 3 Fish oil, as well as Loratidine every few days for Allergies, but been doing this for a while.

3 x Urine Tests (Dip and Lab tests) fine.

As part of my Blood Test, my Inflamation Markers were fine, Thyroid fine, Blood Sugars Fine, Bone Profile ok, Full Blood Count Ok, Vitamin D level Ok, Calcium Levels fine, Kidney fine 79%, lymphocytes ok....

I'll have to speak to my Dr again... :(
