what happens if stop Metforamin?

I've read that if the eGFR is <30 the doctor will most likely take you off Metforamin. My husband's been on it for about 3 years. If he has to quit, will his diet become more strict as far as carbs, etc? Or is there a different drug? Since diagnosed with T2, he's lost over 100 pounds and I'm thinking that will make a difference too. His blood glucose has been consistently good as long as he doesn't go crazy with carbs. But I know he doesn't adhere to a low carb diet. At least not like he did in the beginning.

My doctor had just taken me of meformin, I have stage 4 CKD am at 28 eGFR, it worries me for 5 years my diabetes has been well controlled, but I suffer from lupus, and when I have a flare I have a sugar spike. With no medication to control this spike am worried that more damage will be done to my kidneys I see my consultant this week I will ask him several questions About-withdrawing-this drug. I would get your husband to ask his doctor to do the same, I only used to take 1 a day but it was my safety net. I was told that these tablets actually make CKD at stage 4 worse. But not taking them what will happens when food control is not enough?

I wish your husband luck and he has a wife that is a health warrior on his behalf he is very lucky.

Hi PamelaSC,

I have also come across that if eGFR<30 then Metformin is recommended to be taken off.

I have type 2 diabetes and eGFR 40 and been on Metformin for quite some time. When I discussed Metformin use and low eGFR with my GP she agreed and prescribed me Linagliptin and reduced Metformin dosage.

Now my HBA1C has come down to 41.

So there’s alternative to Metform to control blood sugar.

I hope this helps.

My husband stopped metformin for a while as his GFR was slipping. It was down to 40. When he stopped, his sugar went way out of control with very high numbers. So he went back on it. His sugar is well controlled now and his GFR went back up to 56. Each person is different.

Let you doctor decide.

Update, my consultant says I can now go back on metformin my eGFR is now 36 Whoo Hoo I asked why people are taken off this medication and he said individual doctors do things differently, my blood pressure medication Rampril has the same effect on the kidneys like metformin and he has just increased this as my blood pressure is high 188/102 and has been for the last two weeks.

You never know your husband eGFR might change mine did the lowest mine was was 24 so hoping your husbands next check up goes great.

Good luck to you both sending you positive luppychick vibes.
