It all depends on the size of the kidneys to begin with and how much smaller the right kidney is.

I think this means virtually nothing. Generally it is the opposite. But it is not considered a sign of CKD or disease generally. While it is not common, do a simple search in Google. You will find that is happens without problem.

I have had the same diagnosis but it has never stopped me from doing anything I chose to do and still does not at age 77, so I would say try not to worry too much. Try to eat a sensible, kidney-friendly diet, and, if you smoke, drink alcohol or take NSAIDS, try to cut down or avoid using them as they are all harmful to kidneys. There is plenty of good, reliable information available on the internet but one has to do the research to find it.

If in the UK try 'NHS Choices' and if in USA try ' Davita.com' or 'Mayo Clinic'. Hope this helps, good luck and please let us know how you get one - Curleytop.

Hello curleytop1!

When were you first diagnose with the small kidney? And what steps u had taken to slowing down the progression of CKD?

Actually my husband was also diagnose with one small kidney size of 7cm this year along with CKD 3a due to the hypertension.

We are doing our best to slow the progression by eating healthy and excercising. He is taking his BP medication with fish oil tabelets.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. As I m worried for his health he is only 39.

Hello Fatiooi,

I was diagnosed as having two differently sized kidneys in December 2016, and it was thought that I was born that way. From the details I was able to provide about the health of my brother and our parents, the renal registrar at the hospital was able to tell me that probably the smaller one had never worked very well and the larger one had been doing most of the work. Now I am older, its not working quite so well and that was why I was diagnosed with CKD.

After this conversation at the hospital, I realised that I had been monitored at my doctor's surgery for at least the previous 5 years for kidney function, but they had not told me this and I had assumed it was for my high blood pressure (which I have also inherited).

You have not said in which country you are living, but I am in the UK where it is particularly difficult at present to find a new doctor as under our National Health system, not enough have been trained, so I prefer to stay with mine and build a better relationship with her.

I think you should put your worries about your husband to his doctor and see what advice and help they can give him. In some ways he is lucky to have got this diagnosis while he is so young because you are both able to do something to possibly slow the progression of CKD. Unfortunately, it is not guaranteed that eating a kidney-friendly diet, stopping smoking, giving up alcohol, etc. will work, but remember only a very small number of people diagnosed with CKD get to the point where they need dialysis, let alone a transplant. I understand that you are worried, so the best thing you can do is to do as much research as you can - a good start is to read some of the many posts on here concerning suitable drugs and sources of help (particularly if you live in USA). He is also lucky that he has such great support from you, which will help him so much. Yes definitely we are here to support eachother. I live in KSA.

His nephrologist is not much concerned and just calming us.

But as a partner it's my responsibility to support him, care him as much I can and it is very important that there must be some support system that they feel better, fight bravely. And I m doing with my best. I do a lot of research, they all just agreed that u can definitely slow down your progression with positive attitude, healthy diet, excersice, and ofcourse have faith in GOD. We will be fine surely 😀
