My doctor has put me on Rosuvastatin for my cholesterol which was 5.7. M kidney function has dropped from 57 to 49 in just a few weeks. I have just read that this statin has an increased risk of kidney damage. I have now stopped taking it. We put our faith in our doctors but I really wonder if they know what they are doing when it comes to kidney patients, beware of this statin

Many Doctors prescribe statins for prevention of cholesterol and heart issues. I too was put on a preventative dose. Hated how it made me feel and stopped it. And my cholesterol numbers went down..... talk to your doctor about YOUR choices of medications. You have the right.
Thank you for your reply Bassetmommer. I do hope that by not taking this statin my egfr will go back to near enough what it was and not too much damage has been done, I live in hope. I’m hoping to see my doctor next week to discuss
Sadly, evidence suggests doctors do not know what theyre doing quite often - as youve implied - and regularly prescribe drugs which damage organs including kidneys and liver. The good thing about CKD is that drugs are generally not needed for its management and a natural approach is usually successful (and that's the case with numerous diseases).
Re your tot. cholesterol, it's only fractionally over the 5 "limit". My mum's is stable at ~7 (probably over limit due to her post-menopause) and we are unconcerned - she's been hounded by her nephrologist and GP for years to take statins but refused. Much of the medic rhetoric about cholesterol being harmful for CVD is unwarranted according to leading cardio experts eg Dr Aseem Malhotra. Links available, if of interest.
As youre seeing you doctor again, I suggest that you ask for EVIDENCE that cholesterol of 5.7 is a CVD risk and also that statins improve mortality. Keep me posted eg by pm.
Also, that doctors are often quick to prescribe statins and other drugs; often treating the numbers and not the patient.
I too was prescribed Rosuvastatin 5mg for borderline elevated cholesterol. My pharmacist noted to me that it wasn't the best for kidney patients. I took it and later Atrouvastatin 10mg briefly and had terrible side effects.
My GP found an alternative for me and I'm doing fine.
Look it up in Drugs.com, which will give you insight.
Thank you all for your replies and good advice. I will keep in touch and let you know what happens after I have seen the gp. I have been told that a statin called Lanzoprazole will not affect the kidneys but will research that one. For now, I am taking nothing. Like you Bet I would sooner ask the pharmacist for advice on this subject than my gp as the pharmacists know these drugs better than anyone. I have had awful side effects from Rosuvastatin. Do hope they will wear off soon. Can you tell me please what your gp gave you as an alternative?
I will keep you posted userotc as to the risk that statins improve mortality!
Orangecity I also take fish oil, omega3. What was the non statin cholesterol medicine your doctor put you on.
Thank you all for your help, I will keep you informed
No thanks needed as we are all here to support. Varied thoughts and opinions on this.
What I would do is look Rouvastatin and Atrouvastatin up on Drugs.com.
You can Google it or get the APP on your phone. It will list possible side effects as well as mild, moderate and severe drug interactions.
If you Google the drug name and scroll down to Drugs. com, it will give you specific information so you can print it out as I did and showed it to all on my health care team.
I would do that now and keep an eye on your diet until you see your GP.
