Parathyroid hormone high

I have recently been diagnosed with ckd as gfr 54. On looking through my test results I see that my serum parathyroid hormone level is high (6.5 where normal range is 1.1 - 4.7). This has never been mentioned by dr and I don’t know what it means. Is this connected to ckd? I am female aged 49. Thanks.

Hi please check your vitamin D levels. Often when vitamin d is low pth is high. A simple fix sometime is vitamin d supplements. You should check with your doctor.

Thanks. My vitamin d levels were low at 15 but latest shows an increase to 90. But that was after a long hot summer with lots of sun exposure so expect it will fall again over the winter.

You may want to check with your doctor in that case. But good that your vitamin d is corrected👍

You may need to supplement with Vit D during the winter months. Did your parathyroid readings change with the increase in Vit D? High parathyroid numbers indicate insufficient calcium and the possibility of osteoporosis.

Thanks Osidge. I was looking through my test results and noticed that was showing as abnormal in April when my Vit D was 15. Vit D up to 90 in Sept after lots of sun and supplements but doesn’t look as though the parathyroid was retested.

Great in that case you should check your PTh. It may just have corrected with better vitamin D levels.

All the best.

Hi Redsong,

You may find this information useful from EdRen (Edinburgh University) which gives a good overview of the blood tests for kidney disease. Scroll down the page to the pieces about the parathyroid hormone (PTH) edren.org/pages/edreninfo/b...

Also take a look at the link to CKD website: kidneyresearchuk.org/health...

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
