Hi, new here. My brother had some medical tests done recently where doctors discovered problems with his kidneys. I am unable to speak to him to confirm. I know for a fact his hands and legs were swollen when he went in and I have read this is symptom. Can anyone tell me how bad this is and what stage he might be in? Thank you!

Swollen hands and legs. What stage of CKD is this?
Unable to estimate what stage he may be at I'm afraid. Over the last 20+ years my kidney function has dropped and I'm currently in the process of arranging transplant as my function is now 14%. My hands haven't been swollen for over a year, but have been prior to that. Therefore his swollen hands are a symptom of renal failure, but there's not a definitive stage when this occurs.
My kidney function is very low (around 16%) and I often get swollen feet which is because the kidneys are struggling to extract the water from the blood and make it into urine. There is no way of saying how bad your brothers condition is just based on swollen hands and feet as that could be due to other reasons other than poor kidney function. He would need to have blood tests and then the docs would be able to give him an estimate of his kidney function and advise on the actions he needs to take. It is a shame you are unable to talk with him.
Hi without urine and blood test values it would be a guess. My opinion if it's defentiley the kidneys and I say if because not enough facts. Could be stage 3 to 5. I hope you get to talk with your brother and have some peace of mind soon.
