Does anyone have both CKD and Rheumatoid Arthritis? I have a EGFR of 41 with only one Kidney. I lost one to cancer in 2013. I am having investigation for RA and am worried that pain killers for this condition will damage my remaining Kidney. I know Methetextrate is a drug used for RA but im not keen on having this, but im not aware of any alternatives. I just wondered if any of the members have any experience to share.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with RA - CKD is more than enough to cope with!
I also have a sole kidney and CKD3b with an eGFR of 38 at present. My other kidney was removed very many years ago aged 12. I have had problems with side effects from many blood pressure medications, with some causing rapid reduction in my kidney function, reduced sodium levels, etc etc so I can fully empathise with your fears for your kidney function if you have to take a drug for RA. I had to take steroids for some 5-6 years not too long ago and the first question I asked at each follow up appointment with my rheumatologist was "What are the latest blood test results on my kidney?" Luckily, the steroids didn't present problems kidney-wise, and my rheumatologist used to reassure me that the steroids would not harm my kidney. In fact, steroids are actually the first line of treatment for some kidney diseases. I'm wondering whether steroids might work in RA and, if so, would they be a better option for you. Perhaps it is something you can investigate with your consultant. Good luck.
