I am still trying to find some one who has experienced this awful thing ? My husband developed Spondylodiscitis through his emergency Dialysis line, while he was waiting for his fistula the settle .. The infection seems dormant for now, but he is still in lots of pain , which I believe is due to the long time he was inactive and his muscles now wasted and not giving his spine any support !
Has anyone experienced this awful disease ? and have they fully recovered ?
Oh dear, I am sorry, the pain must be dreadful for your husband. I have spondylitis which of course involves the discs, and this has presently flared up with crippling low back pain. I looked
Spondylodiscitis up on the web and it can be a result of spinal trauma for one thing, plus infection. I don't think my flare ups are due to this nasty sounding problem which obviously requires the professional treatment which he is getting. All I can suggest is a very basic home remedy which helps me and that is heat in the form of a hot water bottle, directly to his back and complete body rest as movement can aggravate the pain. These two are the only things along with pain killers which help me as I wait for the inflammation to subside. I wish I could be of more help, I know this is a very simple sounding bit of relief, but it works for me. All the best.
Wingsofadove .. Any advice is helpful . and some times it is the simple things that help , so many thanks for that ! The trouble is he has a very unhelpful Orthopaedic surgeon, and I have to drag information and advice out of him .. he seemed to have lost interest in my husband when he didn't want to have the spine operation preferring to go down the antibiotic route ! Now it seems that the Discitis has cleared up, so no op needed but because of all the time he was inactive in hospital his muscles have been wasted and he should have had rehab physio , which he didn't get ! just a physio looking to see if he could climb stairs on returning home ! His pain now is not any where near his infection in his spine , but lower down , from old wear and tear , and now without that support of muscle ... He now gets Physio after me nagging for it , but he can do very little because of the pain .. I will look up your complaint and see how much they have in common . Many thanks again !
I'm so glad the discitis has cleared up. I know through experience that wear and tear is aggravated by inactivity, and I am sorry you are having such unhelpful responses. Continuing anxiety does not help either. I find that a muscle relaxant can help. My situation, very similar, was helped by being given weight bearing exercises to strengthen muscles damaged first by a traumatic road accident, with a fractured hip and internal bruising, followed by 6 weeks immobilisation in hospital. The only relief I find now is a muscle relaxant for the spasms, pain killers, balanced rest and activity (ie; pacing myself) and my beautiful microwave hot bottle. It can be very much DIY in these cases!! Best of luck anyway.
Now done some research .. Don't know if you have seen this ? and there is a helpful video ! Ity does sound very painful , and I am thinking if my husband might have developed this now and it has only just come to light, being so long in hospital and not being able to move ? As before he was very active . walking everyday and swimming 3 times a week, swimming 30 minutes without break !

I have just got a "Boots Tens Machine " for my birthday, it's quite a nice massage My Husband will be 77 in September ,he was so fit before he got discitis and even with failing kidneys he was swimming 3 times a week, long swims and walking every day, he did most of the cooking as he was a chef did all the gardening ! I was so spoilt , but now it's my turn to spoil him !
I have just turned 80 ! but fit except for hurting my back, which can happen to even the young . I was riding horses until 60 .... Thanks nonie really helpful x
I've had discitis a few years ago, it's more common I those with necklines
Extremely painful, I now use Octanisan antibacterial wash over my fistula every day against infection

This means so much to me to find some one who has been through this awful thing ! I still get backache but don't think that the discitis has recurred
It's bad enough being on dialysis as it is
Currently on holiday with my girlfriend and Dx is going ok
Swimming is probably the best exercise for back issues after treatment as your supported by the water

I am seeing our new GP next week on behalf of my husband, just changed named doctor as I discovered she was only one day a week ! can you imagine that ? is it a wonder I could never get to see her ? I think I am going to ask for a second opinion for hubby , I have been refused once, but then got a letter from another consultant saying I could ask !
I have a double appointment as I am seeing the doctor for myself ! I pulled a ligament, I expect because I now have to do all the heavy things in the house, was bound to happen !

JMan .. How long were you ill with discitis ? and were they able to diagnose the "bug " ? They couldn't with my husband , even though he had a Biopsy , so he had to have guess work drugs to treat it . He was in hospital for 10 weeks hardly being able to move , the nurses had to do everything for him ... such Angels ! He has been back to hospital on and off since .. and you well know the dialysis doesn't help !
Dear Madame, Are you sure of the correct spelling of the word? I think it is "spondylitis" or inflammation of the vertebrae which somehow may be related to the scoliosis(abnormal curvature of the spine). I myself have a condition of scoliosis which is sometimes accompanied by a pain in my lumbar area, specifically, when I awaken. I think it is true that the inactivity of the limbs of the body causes pain and I think being active and having movements will help us overcome many of our psychological and physical problems. Any way, I,sincerely,wish your husband a quick recovery and a healthy and happy long life.
Hi .. Spondylodiscitis is a totally different thing aadd4444 , It is an infection in the spine and when it is really active the pain can go all over shooting down nerves .. it is a very serious thing and could go to the brain .. It needs treating with IV antibiotics .. The trouble is when the infection is cleared up, one has spent so much time in bed and inactive , I suppose you finish up similar to "spondylitis "!

Thank you Jess .. My Husband is coming home from hospital today after a very traumatic 2 weeks , He had pneumonia and just kept collapsing ! He has now seen the pain people , lots of things I don't understand , But he is now being taken off Fentanyl patches which is being done gradually ! they may try Butrans patch 5 micrograms per hour strength for two weeks , increasing it thereafter to 10 ... They say that Buprenorphine is a much safer alternative to most opioids and safe for long term use ,. He will be called back to the hospital again shortly . It is all "greek" to me !
